Oh, the Places You'll Go! tells the tale of a boy who is on his way to big things, but it's a delicate balance between times when you soar and times when you don't. Not only will life be filled with great opportunities, but also "Bang-ups and Hang-ups". This refreshing book is told in rhyme with the same whimsical illustrations made famous by Seuss. It's a book about trying and accepting life's challenges, but also about the great open world ahead of someone, be they a child entering kindergarden, a high school graduate or even an adult embarking on a new phase in life.
This was Dr. Seuss's last book, published in 1990, and it is wonderfully uplifting and optimistic, without being unrealistic. People get stuck in the 'waiting place', but this is not for the boy in the story, since he's off to bigger things. But even when it tells of winning moments it also highlights the times that are tough and even the scary times when the boy is all alone. "But on you will go ..." the story continues, because you can "face up to your problems whatever they are." It is an inspirational book that will please kids and grown-ups alike.
For the read-a-long effect, each word is highlighted as it is narrated. Tap on any word to hear it spoken, even in the 'read-it-myself' mode. Most of the Dr. Seuss books are great for children learning to read because they are filled with simple words and while this title goes beyond 'sight' words it should be an enjoyable read for kids 6 and up.
Although each page is essentially a still image, many pages begin by panning over Seuss' classic original artwork, zooming in and out to show off each segment of text, a nice semi-animated style. The digital iPad/iPhone versions of Dr. Seuss books have no real animation, although most of the items pictured in the story react to a light tap with a visual image of the word with accompanying audio (for example, tap on a tree and the word "tree" appears with audio saying “tree”).
Ultimately the book's message is that "Life's a Great Balancing Act". It is a great gift for graduates from preschool to college and all the other transition points in life. And as a digital book, it is delightful, losing nothing in the translation.
