Green Eggs and Ham - Read & Learn - Dr. Seuss

The Digital Media Diet

A classic early reader becomes an interactive literacy learning platform!

Green Eggs and Ham - Read & Learn is part of a new app series based on the beloved early reader classics from Dr. Seuss. We love this newly updated "Read & Learn" format, from the talented team at Oceanhouse Media. Launched in 2009, this developer has produced hundreds of high-quality apps for young readers, including all of the titles from Dr. Seuss.

This new version of Green Eggs and Ham will not disappoint, but what is different in this title? How has "Read & Learn" improved or changed the digital reading experience? If you have seen earlier Dr. Seuss book apps, you'll know that most of the titles have little or no animation and limited interactivity. These well-constructed apps are a staple of digital reading and valuable still, but the new "Read & Learn" version takes advantage of the touch-tablet medium even more, meeting the expectations of a new digital generation of kids and their parents.

This app includes much more animation than earlier Seuss apps, alongside interactive features that include learning activities. These additions focus on early literacy, encouraging young readers to tap images on each page of the classic title. One of the items on each page brings an extra surprise - a fun learning activity. There are "sound starters" (emphasizing first letters in words), "who's who" (matching characters), "rhyme time" (matching rhyming words by sound), "super speller" (word formation), "choose me" (story content), "what's what" (story content) and more! These 'games' are triggered by tapping a small star icon at the bottom right corner of the screen, and after being unlocked, all games can be revisited from a link on the front page.

Interactive enhancements like those in the Read & Learn series, make this new "Green Eggs and Ham" an excellent classroom or learning app for any setting, especially for preschool-aged learner readers. For instance, on the first page, kids are invited to find the letters to spell the word "Sam". Choices include "d m s a" for a drag-and-drop activity that teaches how to spell simple words. These activities do break into the reading experience briefly, but disappear after being unlocked (accessed on the title page only).

This book has all the great features parents, librarians and teachers have come to love about Oceanhouse Media apps, like quality narration with touch-to-hear, highlighting, sound settings and easy navigation via a pageguide. Links for adults (including web and social media) are neatly tucked into a parent section that requires fluent reading to access.

Overall, this is an exceptional new addition to the children's app market, featuring solid educational enhancements, thoughtful interactivity and well-produced effects. No digital library for kids should go without Green Eggs and Ham, and this version is among the very best!

Story Synopsis - Green Eggs and Ham - Read & Learn - Dr. Seuss

Green Eggs and Ham is a short work of fiction by legendary kids book author Dr. Seuss, in which a very persistent Sam-I-Am repeatedly asks his unnamed friend, in a multiplicity of ways, whether his friend would like ham accompanied by, of all things, green eggs. As the story begins, Sam's friend is recalcitrant. He tells Sam-I-Am that he "would not like them" in "a box" or "a house," nor with "a fox" or "a mouse," that he "would not eat them here or there," and in fact "would not eat them anywhere." Yet Sam-I-Am's friend's dogmatic anti-ham stance proves to be fleeting, as during the dramatic climax of the yarn, he suddenly and without warning embraces that which he has scorned to that critical juncture. Sam-I-Am's epiphany is so profound and his transformation so thorough that from this point forward he embraces the once-loathed food in all its locations -- and, the reader is led to believe, incarnations. His friend now covets the cuisine not only "in a boat" and "on a train," but also "in the dark" and "in a tree." It is not made clear whether he would go out of his way to eat the tasty eggs and ham treat or whether he would simply accept it if offered on the spot in its varied locations, but the author does make the reader acutely aware, in no uncertain terms, of one vital point: Sam's formerly ham-and-egg-spiting friend has a new perspective on this peculiar manifestation of cured pork and emerald-hued huevos. He likes it. He likes it a lot. [Source: WikiSummaries]
