Bert E. Bird the Third and the Book of Great Ideas is a charming app from a new development studio, SoundBox Multimedia, headed up by Gil Gur Arie. This digital book is exceptional in many ways, crafting a fun story with well-tailored interactivity on every page. Play mini-games, tap characters and more in this nicely produced digital storybook for kids 6 and up.
The tale itself begins with a page that says, "The End". This is foreshadowing for a story that is just beginning and will eventually begin again. We meet the main character, Bert E. Bird (The Third) and discover that he has a bit of trouble while falling asleep because of all his fantastical ideas. The story goes on to share Bert's imaginative plans, including filling a shoebox with rainbows or putting giggles into a can. The ideas keep coming in this well-crafted story, eventually leading to a way to restart the book.
In addition to solid programming, this app pairs a wonderful amount of interactivity with engaging ideas for children to explore. The illustrations are charming and cartoon-like, perfect for the target audience. The story itself is long with over 20 pages and a playtime of 30 minutes or more. This makes for an app that is full of replay value and fun for most elementary school aged children, including those playing together or with an adult. For pre-readers playing alone, there is also lovely narration, although it does not highlight as it is read.
Like most book apps, Bert E. Bird the Third and the Book of Great Ideas does have a couple minor areas worthy of improvement. One easy fix would be the font, which is white text outlined in black. I would recommend a simple black font in the same size (which is big and easy for little ones to read). The other area to fix is also a simple but effective addition, a page-guide. For a book of this length it is very frustrating to not be able to flip to a specific page easily, especially when a child doesn't get all the way through on the first reading.
Overall, this is a stellar addition to any digital library of children's book apps. It has all the hallmarks of a good app for kids. It is engaging, age-appropriate (including the reading level) and uses the technology to enchant, not distract. It could even be a good bedtime story. For all the dreamers out there, this book of ideas is top notch and well worth a download.
