Children's Book - Monkey & Croc

February 21, 2011

The Digital Media Diet

A cute monkey and a less-than-menacing looking crocodile star in this little digital book app for kids age 2-6. It is filled with gorgeous illustrations that tell the story as much as the words. The text of the story is comprised of very simple sentences, making this an ideal book for young children learning to read.

The story is also very cute. Monkey and croc appear to have a lot in common - they both live in the jungle, like to hide and ... they are both hungry. As the monkey heads for some bananas, the reader sees 'Croc' with his eye on the monkey (possibly to eat him for a snack). But after several pages of following the monkey with a hungry look, we find out Croc is also searching for bananas. Turns out Monkey & Croc have a love for bananas in common, ending the book sharing their fruit as friends.

The narration is clear and crisp, although it is more suitable for a child learning to read than a bedtime story. The narrator reads very slowly, emphasizing each word as it is read along with highlighting of the text. This is a great feature for children learning to sound out sentences, but lacks the charm of most narrated stories on the iPad.

The settings for the book are well done, with simple on/off buttons for sound effects and narration. Page turning is also easy and the book feels very polished overall. There is a tiny bit of interactivity, mainly sound effects when you tap Monkey or Croc, but they are the exact same effects on nearly every page, so after the first read, they lack much replay value.

This is a really nice book without any bells & whistles, though. And Will Terry's illustrations are just delightful. I really enjoyed reading this story with my child with all the sound off - it's a nice & short bedtime read. And when I want to let my son have a book narrated, I think this title's unique narration style may even help him as he's learning to read.

Story Synopsis - Children's Book - Monkey & Croc

Using very simple sentences, this little ebook tells the tale of a monkey and crocodile that have a lot in common. They both live in the jungle, they both cross the river, like to hide and are even hungry at the same time. The monkey leads, as he searches for food, with the croc close behind. It appears at first that the croc wants to eat the monkey, but in a nice turn of events, the croc is actually after bananas, too. They sit together and eat them on the final page - like good friends!
