Maggie and the Perfect Puppy

The Digital Media Diet

This is a cute and very short little book with light animation. It is about a little girl, Maggie, who is going to pick out her first puppy. She has some extraordinary expectations of the pup, wanting a dog that is purple with polka-dots and has a rainbow colored tongue. He will also smell like cinnamon rolls and have long yellow hair for tying bows. Oh, and add to that duck feet, butterfly wings and a unicorn horn. When Maggie finally gets to the group of puppies to choose from she looks around and then sees her perfect pup, purple as can be. We never do find out if he has all her other criteria met, but perhaps he is perfect in all those ways, too.

The book is nicely narrated with colorful illustrations that fit the whimsy of the story. There are a couple small interactive elements that trigger tiny animations, which are a nice addition to the otherwise still images. The book has page turn arrows, but essentially has only one setting - autoplay. It also has settings to turn off the sounds and music. The music is a nice piano tune that plays in the background throughout the book on a continuous loop. A few small sound effects can be heard when tapping on several of the pictures, including a cat that meows and giggles.

It isn't possible to really read the book yourself at your own pace, since even with the sound off the pages turn automatically. This is my only real complaint. You can use the page arrows to turn the pages sooner, but there is no way to really navigate the book on your own, with or without narration. Overall the story is sweet with not much depth, ending after barely two minutes. It is a nice diversion for a child by themselves or works well as a quick bedtime read.
