This cute title under the category 'education' is actually a sweet storybook about two kids going to the beach and counting things into their shiny red pail. The counting interactivity is only for numbers 1-5, but it is a good complement to the simple story. This app is appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers in particular. The text is also in a clear, easy to read font that would be suitable for young readers. Nice sound effects accompany most of the tappable interactions.
The illustrations are simple but engaging. The book is also narrated by children, making it appealing to youngsters. The audio doesn't have the same polished, professional feel that many app books now have, but it is easy to listen to and well enunciated despite the young voices. At the beginning of the book, the reader is asked to help the kids collect items on the beach. On each page the child can tap on the objects to see & hear them counted while they fill the children's pail.
The 'animation' is really just objects bouncing briefly on the screen with simultaneous narration describing the object, but it is well done. For instance if you tap on the sun on any of the pages, audio plays saying "the sun is hot and yellow" while the sun spins for a few moments. While very short, this book is a great choice for the youngest children. App books for kids under age 3, in particular, need to have very simple interactivity. The book reinforces rudimentary counting skills while children have fun watching the objects bounce into Jack & Emma's pail.
