Ben the Tractor and the lost sheep

The Digital Media Diet

This digital book has become a fast favorite of my preschooler. The interactivity enhances this simple story about counting. The book is about Tractor Ben. A fence has broken and the sheep have wandered off the farm. The child is asked to help Ben by tapping the sheep on each page. The sheep 'leap' into the trailer Ben is towing on page after page, until he has picked up 10 sheep in total.

At first Ben cannot see the hidden creatures, so the child's actions become central to the storytelling. There are 10 sheep and if the child doesn't tap on them all, farmer Johnny appears and says that Ben needs to go back. All the 'hidden' animals are easy to find for even a young child. On the last page, you tap each animal to 'herd' it back into the corral. As the sheep move into the corral, they are counted 1-10.

The book is interactive in other ways, too. There are many things to tap for cute animations and sound effects. The tractor rumbles, the windmill spins and all the animals talk or animate in a fun way. Even the arrows for the page turn have a fun, tilt down animation every time you turn the page. My only suggestion for an update would be to have the interactive elements wait until the narration is completed to begin their sound effects, since it can interfere with the narration. In the meantime, just wait until the reading stops before you begin 'playing' with the book.

In addition to the story/activity, there is a puzzle option included that lets the child put together puzzles based on all 12 pages of the story. This extra is well made and includes adjustable difficulty levels for 4, 6, 9 or 16 pieces. Overall this is a great little app with educational content, extra value added with the puzzles and most importantly an engaging but simple story that young children will love.
