Like getting 24 books in one app!

Letter Buddies AlphaBooks is a packed app that is really more like 24 little books rolled into one. Each letter is illustrated with cute feet, hands & happy faces. They also have a personality trait assigned to them, like Chatty C and Furry F. The illustrations, combined with high quality photographs make for an alphabet app that stands out in an otherwise crowded market. It is also well-designed with educational goals in mind.

Each letter is covered through pictures and words, along with short sentences using the word correctly. For instance, in A, there is an 'Airplane' with the sentence, "The airplane is in the sky." A simple 'flash card' style image of an airplane is featured with the word. Then, in the second scene, an airplane is taking off with the sound of an engine added. Each letter book also features a different concept played out over all 6 sentences. For instance, in A, each sentence describes the location of the item, like 'in the grass' (for ant) or 'on the tree' (for apple).

This is a great learning app for children learning to read or just to become more familiar with the alphabet. The words are well articulated and highlight individually as each sentence is read. The images are accompanied by sound effects, like the sound of an airplane taking off. These books aren't exactly interactive, although the child can double tap on any page to re-play the narration. The app is also well made with an intuitive interface that is simple enough for toddlers to navigate.

By using a combination of sounds, narration and visual images, this app reinforces basic letter recognition, sight words and early reading skills in a very engaging way. My preschooler loved it. And at over 300 pages this app is a great value. When I tested this app, my son needed nearly an hour to get through the entire series of 24 books (XYZ is combined).

While this book isn't much of a bedtime story and lacks animation, it is perfect as an educational reader. Only one word of warning - the app is almost 200MB to install, although that is understandable given the content. Recommended for pre-readers or even those learning English as a second language.

All reviews are of the app, not the platform/device. Based originally on iPad versions. Minor technical details may vary.
