The Truly Great Noodle

The Digital Media Diet

Eating spaghetti has never been quite so funny ...

This is a tremendous iPad book app from a new developer, Grids Interactive. It is the simple but hilarious story of a little boy named Nate, who is attempting to eat one long noodle that has wound its way around town. This noodle gets into some pretty dirty places, including winding through a cat box & the stall of a farting pig. Nate himself also burps and turns green, but the off-color humor hits just the right note of gross for its target audience; my little boy loved this book and the noodle that just seemed to go on and on.

The interactivity is top notch, with dozens of elements on every page that respond to a tap. The animations are humorous & irreverent although not necessarily tied to the storyline. Many animations change over time when tapped repeatedly, giving this title great replay value, too. The cartoon-like illustrations are delightful and paired with great background music and lots of high-quality sound effects.

The book features a couple of nice extras, too. There is a simple 'game' that measures the sound of your own burp, called the "Burp-O-Meter". It also has a collection of five of Nate's 'burp' sound effects from the book. The real treat, though, is that the app contains the entire album of kids songs called, "Believe in Pasta" that was recorded as a 'companion album' to this original app.

For a digital title, this one is very well made, with great animated production values and intuitive interactivity on every page. The words highlight as read in a clean, easy to read font and page turn arrows respond solidly to a child's tap. There are lots of settings, too, all easily accessible from the bottom of every page. You can even set it to 'storybook mode' to make sure the narration completes before tappable items become accessible to the reader. The only thing I would suggest for an update would be a way to turn down the background music separately from the other sounds and maybe a setting for 'auto-play'.

Overall this is one of the best iPad book apps out there (and I've reviewed nearly 250 titles). The developer even shares a portion of their profits from every download with charitable partners (for this title the partner is Kids Against Hunger: http://kidsagainsthunger.org).

The Truly Great Noodle gets my highest recommendation!

Story Synopsis - The Truly Great Noodle

Nate is a boy who is about to eat dinner (a plate of spaghetti & meatballs) when he begins to slurp up a noodle that winds its way off the table and onto the floor ... and out the door! It goes past a dog on a walk, near a frog by a pond, around a cat in a neighborhood sand box, through a farm, under a hog and even past a sleeping old man in a rocking chair on his porch!

All the while Nate is still trying to suck the noodle into his mouth. This 'truly great noodle' then goes up over an oak tree, past a squirrel, by a horse on Blueberry Lane, around an old train, and then finally ends its journey in an old junk shop next to a boot. Nate stops only to burp before finishing every last bite.

When he's done, Nate's face turns green so he drinks up his juice before running off to see why his mom is calling. And she's saying, "Don't forget, dear, to eat your meatball!" Pictured at the front door is a huge ball of meat with animals and other items rolled into the mass ... yuck! The End.
