The Elly books, by Jon Higham, have gotten a makeover! Each title now has the lovely narration of Rose Higham, "a drama student and the author’s niece." The text doesn't highlight as read, but it is otherwise perfect now for pre-readers.
Elly the Reindeer is a cute cartoon-style reindeer. She has adventures with her animal friends in a sweet rural setting where all the child-like characters live in their own homes and look to each other for help, fun and solving the occasional dilemma. In this story Elly and her friends have a snowman building competition.
Elly can't decide what to make for the contest, but she admires all the snowmen her friends have created. When it suddenly starts to snow heavily, the other participants go indoors for a break, but Elly is still trying to finish her masterpiece. When her friends return, they find Owl giving 1st price to a very nice snowdeer, but where is Elly? Then she bursts out from inside the snowdeer - she had become covered in snow just perfectly while trying to decide what to make! The friends laugh about this and share a basket of treats as the grand prize.
This cute series of books has become a fast favorite of my preschooler at bedtime. They are short & sweet, perfect for bedtime. With features like simple swipe-style page turning and an easy to read font, they are also a good choice for children learning to read. This one has a few odd sentences, like the prize is described as a 'hamper prize' and at the end Elly says, let's go back to 'mine' (instead of 'my house'), but otherwise this is another really sweet digital title.
All of the Elly books are enhanced with just a tiny bit of interactivity, featuring a single sound on about half the pages. This sound effect is tied to the text on the page, like an owl hooting or the sound of soft footsteps in the snow. It is triggered by tapping in a small circled image that corresponds with the sound. It is a nice little extra, but nothing to distract too much from the story or overstimulate a child at bedtime.
Like the other Elly books, this title features the same child-like animal friends that demonstrate positive pro-social behavior toward each other. It is perfect for reading to young children at any time of day. It will be nice when narration is added to these titles, but even without, they are delightful and engaging for young readers and listeners.

In this ebook, the sixth of the Elly the Reindeer books, Elly receives a visit from Paavo the postman about a snowman competition. After dressing warmly she heads out to join her friends. Each of them makes fun snow animals - Aapo makes a snow bear, Harry makes a snow penguin and Fin has a cute snowman with carrot nose. But Elly can't decide what to make.Since it's started snowing heavily and they are mostly done with their creations, Elly's friends all decide to head inside for a bit before returning for the announcement of the winner. Elly stays behind to work on her snowman. When the friends return, they can't find Elly. Owl is there judging a very fine Snow-Reindeer, though. He is giving it 1st prize when all of a sudden, Elly pops out of the snowdeer! She had been covered in snow while trying to think of what to make. Everyone laughs and ejoys the basket of treats together.
