There's a Wocket in My Pocket! - Dr. Seuss

The Digital Media Diet

There’s a Wocket in My Pocket! is a fun book app, pairing funny, made-up animals with the whimsical illustrations that make Seuss books instant classics. The story follows a young boy who lives in a place inhabited by lots of crazy rhyming creatures, from a 'Wasket' (in a basket) to a 'Zillow' (on a pillow). And no, that's not the real estate 'Zillow' but a strange & cuddly creature to share your bed.

In print, this book has been a favorite of young readers and their parents since it's publication in 1974. This one stands out for its sheer silliness, featuring lots of made-up rhymes. Great extension activities for kids can include making up their own crazy rhyming creatures after reading, even, encouraging creative thinking.

Like the other titles from Oceanhouse Media, this book also has an eye on educational enhancements. For the read-a-long effect, each word is highlighted as it is read.  Tap on any word to hear it spoken, even in the 'read-it-myself' mode. These book apps also have ample settings, with the absence of only one thing I would suggest - a page guide.

Although each page is essentially a still image, many pages begin by panning over Seuss' classic original artwork, zooming in and out to show off each segment of text, a nice semi-animated style. For interactivity, most of the items pictured in the story react to a light tap with a visual image of the word with accompanying audio (for example, tap the boy on any page and the word "me" appears with audio saying “me” since this title is told in the 1st person by the boy). If the image tapped is also represented in the text on that page, the word will highlight as well.

In digital form, Seuss book apps are often even more fun than in print and this one is no exception. This title is also one of the shorter Seuss books, making it a nice bedtime read. I particularly liked having it narrated to get the full effect of all those crazy rhymes. A must for any digital Seuss collection!

Story Synopsis - There's a Wocket in My Pocket! - Dr. Seuss

Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? is a 1974 children's book by Dr. Seuss. Told in rhyme with many imaginary creatures.

"A boy lives in a house where it's commonplace to find a ZOWER enjoying a nice hot shower or a ZELF napping on a pantry shelf. With some exceptions (such as the NOOTH GRUSH on his toothbrush), the boy likes his housemates. This is a terrific read-aloud or primer, illustrated in glowing orange, yellow, magenta, and purple." [Summary from CommonSenseMedia.org]

Many of the Seuss titles that are aimed specifically at children learning to read were developed in an interesting way. Apparently, a list was compiled of 348 words that were important for first-graders to recognize, then cut to 250 words and the task was to write a book using only those words. They wanted Seuss to "bring back a book children can't put down." Nine months later, using 236 of the words given to him, he completed The Cat in the Hat. [Source:  Wikipedia]
