Giggly Spider

The Digital Media Diet

A great bedtime read for young children ...

This short, sweet digital title is not narrated but features beautiful illustrations and just the right touch of animation and interactivity for toddlers and preschoolers. Each page has an engaging image of an animal, insect or bird and then a second page with that creature's home (or bed). The interactivity is simple but delightful, from helping a spider create its web to splattering a pig with mud. In the end, the reader pulls the covers over a sleeping child, a perfect way to set the mood for bedtime.

As a digital title this app doesn't have a lot of settings, just arrow page turning and a way to reset the book at the end. A page guide and home button would be nice additions, but for such a short title this is not a huge complaint. The book is solidly made and has an interesting option for "mummy reading" or "daddy reading" which only determines the final page (with a mommy or daddy giving a kiss goodnight). At first I thought this would trigger female or male narration, so it is a little confusing in the initial set up.

The book lacks narration but has a lot of other sounds, from birds chirping to rooster's crowing and everything in between, for all the animals pictured. The storyline is simple but engaging and just the right amount of interactivity for young listeners. Overall this is a beautiful little book with nice sound effects and a great balance of enhancements for little ones. While added narration would be nice, even without it, this is an ideal bedtime read. Whether mommy or daddy is putting the little one to bed, this app has you covered.
