This delightful storybook app is based on the print edition published in 2007. Pete and Pillar, two trucks, are best friends despite coming from different worlds. You see, one truck is a 'hauler', while the other a 'digger' and these two types of vehicles just don't like each other very much. But in the end the friendship between these two helps save the town from a flood and teaches everyone, including the reader, a great lesson about friendship.
This is a lightly enhanced digital offering from the PicPocket Books collection. It makes a fabulous bedtime read and is a top pick of my little boy for reading together. You can tap on the trucks to hear sound effects of hauling and digging plus the eyes of the trucks animate in an expressive way. These books don't leap off the page, but the storytelling is superb along with wonderful illustrations that make for an ideal picture book for kids.
This title features word-by-word highlighting to go along with the professional narration. It also has easy swipe-style page turning and a clear, simple font perfect for young readers. Overall this is a great little book for storytime, especially suited for sharing with multiple children or for bedtime reading.

Pete and Pillar were best friends, even though one of them was a 'hauler' and the other was a 'digger'. These two kinds of vehicles were not usually friendly, but these two didn't care. Their friendship mattered more to them than what others expected of them. One day an old dump truck tries to tell Pete to stop being friends with the smelly, rusty digger (Pillar). A road grader tries to tell Pillar that Pete isn't a good friend to have, too.
But Pete and Pillar don't listen to the gossip - they stay best, best friends. Then one day a terrible rain storm comes. The water floods the valley. Together, Pete & Pillar work together when all the other trucks abandon the town. Their efforts to keep the water at bay saves the town, but only because they were willing to work together.
At first, Pillar thinks Pete has abandoned him, but actually Pete was at the edge of the dam plugging a hole with himself! Pillar is impressed to see his friend sacrifice himself to save the town. So Pillar gets all the trucks to help out to save Pete from all the mud and water. Soon Pete is clean, shiny and like new again.
The two friends spread their cooperative spirit to all the other trucks. From them on, diggers and haulers worked side-by-side as friends. And the town is better for their friendship!
