This simple children's book about opposites has anything but a simple approach to it's design. Peepers are bird-like creatures with colorful, crazy "feathers", zany eyes and extra long legs. The illustrators' whimsical style matches perfectly with the text, sound effects and cheerful narration.
This book has two modes, interactive or automatic. The interactive mode is by far more fun, though, allowing the child to choose between two possible words to fill in the blank for the 'opposite' word in each pair (ex. "I say, fancy, You say ______." plain or sparkly). The child then can touch/hold & drag the correct word into the blank, although this took my child & I a little while to figure out since the directions were a bit unclear
The interactivity in this book is technically simple, but still top notch because it engages children and builds reading comprehension and even recognition of some sight words. The images are truly fanciful and the effect when combined with high-quality sounds is a treat. The sounds, like rain, children's voices and other fun sound effects, are delightful to children while managing not to annoy adults (a difficult accomplishment).
The interactive mode isn't great for bedtime at our house, but otherwise we have really enjoyed this title. It was a good test for my four year old's knowledge of opposites and led to a spontaneous discussion of other opposites around the house. Highly recommended for young children & early readers.

[YouTube Video below is of the author reading the print book to a class of school children] Seventeen pairs of opposites are featured with each of the six peepers. Each pair of terms (ex. fancy/plain) is illustrated to complement the meaning of the pair of opposites (ex. plain is in grayscale & fancy is very colorful). Each pair also rhymes nicely with the next set of words (ex. sunshine/rain). In automatic mode the story plays & pages also turn automatically. In interactive mode each page must be manually turned and blanks filled in to trigger the sounds and colors of the 'opposite' term (ex. sound of rain). Every pair has unique, high quality sound effects and colorful artwork. The following opposites are covered: fancy/plain, sunshine/rain, in/out, whisper/shout, early late, crooked/ straight, yes/no, stop/go, smile/frown, up/down, black/white, left/right, push/pull, empty/ full, sea/sky, hello/goodbye, beginning/The End. A bonus section describes each of the six peepers personalities.
