Vlad's Vampire Bats

February 10, 2012

By: Carisa Kluver

The Digital Media Diet

A unique title perfect for both Valentine's & Halloween!

Vlad is a Vampire with a fate as terrible as King Midas ... only Vlad turns everything into bats not gold. This makes poor Vlad very lonely. But love is in the air, even for our fanged-friend Vlad. One day he finds a beautiful girl vampire picking flowers in the woods and falls in love. The two turn his castle into a sanctuary for bats and live happily ever after ... a gentle ending for a book about vampires.

This title features fun computer-graphic style illustrations and a story that will warm even the coldest vampire heart. Animations are very slight, but satisfying. Interactive elements are nicely tied to the storyline (for the most part) and will have young readers eager to turn the page.

As a digital title, this book app is solidly made with a nice array of settings, including a home button, numbered pages (athough no page guide) and volume controls. Text is in a clear font, although it doesn't highlight as narrated and appears at the bottom of the page in a 'karoke sytle' that matches the computer generated feel of the other graphic elements.

Overall, this is an adorable storybook app with fun interactive elements, light animation and the flexibility to read the book in several languages besides English, inlcuding German, Japanese, Spanish & French, although narration is provided only for English. While this app was launched in October, just in time for Halloween, I found this unusal love story to be a great read for Valentine's Day, too. Recommended.

All reviews are of the app, not the platform/device. Based originally on iPad versions. Minor technical details may vary.

Story Synopsis - Vlad's Vampire Bats

Vlad is a Vampire and the reader is invited into his castle ... light the candles and see Vlad's food appear. Tap the food and it sprouts wings and flies off like a bat. It turns out that, "most things Vlad touched turned into bats." Vlad was lonely though and longed for a Vampire wife. He needed to find someone who was not afraid of bats!

While trying to walk off his anxiety about his lonely existence, Vlad discovers a beautiful vampire girl in the forest, picking flowers. Vlad is worried that the flowers might bite the girl and takes one away from her ... to her surprise it turns into a bat and flies away. Turns out, Vera (the cute girl vampire) loves bats.

The two new friends walk together towards Vlad's castle. They decide to turn the place into a 'bat sanctuary' where they can care for all the bats Vlad has created. To Vera, Vlad's 'problem' is actually a 'magical gift'. Soon the two vampire's have fallen in love. They are even able to change into bats themselves.
