And on that farm he had a ...

Old MacDonald keeps many animals, eleven in all (see synopsis for full list), in this sing-along story featuring the popular children's tune in verse. This musical app is full of interactivity that will surprise and delight youngsters. You may have "E-I-E-I-O" stuck in your head after playing, but your little ones will be all smiles.

The tune, like many children's songs, may grate on the ears of adults with the many re-playings young children adore, but it is catchy. Animations are simple, but polished movements of the images, adding a fun touch, but the real highlight of this app is the interactivity. Young readers can tap an egg to see a chick hatch, splash mud on the pigs, and even swipe to get the horse to run along a cool scrolling background.

The 12 pages have bright, colorful graphics that will appeal to kids and text that highlights as it is sung. The settings for this title are ample, too, including a page guide and ways to adjust the music, text and more. Parents should be cautioned about links that leave the app, however, including connections to social media (Facebook, Twitter), email, the web and AppStore. These links are tucked away in the settings, but if your child likes to explore an app like mine does, consider setting the device to airplane mode when handing it over to kids under 6 (a good general practice).

Overall, this is a very cute app version of a classic children's tune. You have lots of choices in the AppStore for popular song apps for kids, but this one has some special qualities. It is well made and fun, but also flexible. You can turn off the music and text entirely, making the app great for a toddler to explore with just sound effects ... like a wordless, animated (and noisy) picture book. If you have a toddler or preschooler, this is an app guaranteed to amuse!

All reviews are of the app, not the platform/device. Based originally on iPad versions. Minor technical details may vary.

From Wikipedia: Old MacDonald Had a Farm is a children's song and nursery rhyme about a farmer named MacDonald (or McDonald, Macdonald) and the various animals he keeps on his farm. Each verse of the song changes the name of the animal and its respective noise. In many versions, the song is cumulative, with the noises from all the earlier verses added to each subsequent verse.
