What if your house cared about how you cared for it? This original storybook app from Jumping Pages brings young readers a tale where the family abode takes on a life of its own with deeper messages for everyone in the household. Featuring lots of interactive elements for young readers to tap on, this title reinforces the idea that home is a place you need to maintain as a whole family. The usual story about cleaning up and taking care of our surroundings can be rather boring (to both kids and adults), making this story a treat, as the appliances and furniture have personalities and feelings about how well they are being treated.
Told in simple but well-crafted rhyme, this story is about a house that needed to teach the family living in it a lesson. At first, the family treats their home poorly, by leaving on lights, having lots of fights and watching too much TV instead of keeping up with their chores. Having their home reject them, appliances revolt and general mayhem in the house they once felt safe in, makes the family 'wake up' to the reality of their neglect and laziness. Soon they are welcomed back inside as they form teams to clean up their messes and get organized.
I especially liked the message of this title, emphasizing that everyone in a household needs to work together to keep their home tidy, organized and clean. Children will identify with the struggle to keep up with chores and parents will appreciate the chance to make discussing housework fun. Interactive elements are story-related, but not always useful for story comprehension, especially since they can be triggered indefinitely. The text is also very small, although it does highlight as narrated.
Overall, this is a well-made app with excellent settings that include a page guide, audio controls and easy navigation with simple arrows at the bottom corners of each page. Children will enjoy the story a lot, especially the anthropomorphized appliances that form a mini revolution. Adults (both parents & educators) will find this story satisfying and useful for teaching about the importance of keeping a house 'in order' in a fun and engaging way that makes talking about chores much less of a 'chore'! Recommended.
