Snowpo: The Trip for Fish and Chips

Join Snowpo on a some very tasty travels ...

Snowpo: The Trip for Fish and Chips is a short but sweet book app for kids ages three and up with unique interactivity. It is the story of a very hungry polar bear who has a hankering for fish and chips. What better way to satisfy such a craving than flying off to London to sample the local fare? Snowpo does get into a bit of hot water along the way, but this is a fun tale overall. The storyline has a nursery rhyme quality about it, told in simple but solidly written verse to match the cool, retro-looking artwork.

This digital book also offers crisp narration that highlights word-for-word, pairing nicely with the polished illustrations. The images have a cartoon-like quality that kids will love, although there is no animation. Parents will also appreciate that there are no links that leave this book. There is no page guide, although a home button does reset the app easily, and there are ample settings for music and narration.

While not animated, the interactivity does involves motion. Readers can tap three different items of food in each scene and send them swirling about the page. This is a unique idea and includes a little button in the top left-hand corner (marked with a "!") that asks a question of the reader when tapped. The questions are about the story and often suggest that the reader find certain items or challenge themselves with a word puzzle. The questions do not appear in text form within the app, however, which would be a nice way to increase opportunities for reading (and might make the word puzzles a bit easier to follow).

This unusual enhancement seems like a good idea that lacks clear execution. There is no way to let the reader know if they have completed each task, giving the special effects an incomplete feeling. Many of the puzzles are also over the skill level of young children and were difficult for me to do without pencil and paper (playing the audio several times over to catch everything).

Overall, it felt like the interactivity within the app wasn't fully finished, although I appreciate the attempt to improve reading comprehension by asking more of kids as they follow along. I can recommend this book for the story alone, however. It is fun and full of engaging illustrations and lots of opportunities to talk about different kinds of cuisine. It just might make you hungry, too!

Snowpo is an enchanting explorer who will be going on more adventures. According to the developer's website, book two will be released soon, "exploring the adventures of Snowpo, his elder brother Tycoon Seal and erstwhile adversary Park Porkie Ranger." And this summer they will be adding other language versions of 'The Trip for Fish and Chips' - Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, German, French, Russian and Portuguese.
