Get ready for an adventure with Alizay the Pirate Girl! This app by French developer Slim Cricket Books takes children on a treasure hunt with Alizay and her father, Captain Rubber Foot. Together they will set sail to Wind Rose Island where they must complete several activities in order to find the treasure.
This book can be read in either French or English. It has two reading options: Read to Me and Read by Myself. It also has three difficulty levels to choose from. The harder levels will take more skill and time to complete some activities.
My two girls, ages 6 and 11, tested this app with me. The beautiful illustrations, interactive items, and animation right on the “cover” page immediately drew their interest. The activities were a lot of fun to complete and used quite a number of skill sets including listening, memorization, hand-eye coordination, and oral motor movement (blowing). The narration was clear and easy to follow. The voices used were perfect for each character. I loved that each character’s words were color-coded, I have never seen that done before, and I thought it was very nice touch. At the end of the book, there are a couple of fun surprises. One is when the reader’s face “magically” appears as the Master of the Wind. The other surprise is revealed after the reader completes four activities in the book. I won’t reveal what it is here, but I guarantee that your kids will have a lot of fun with it.
There are just a few things I would like to see. In the Read to Me option, I would like to see words highlighted as they are read. In the Read By Myself option, you have to wait for an arrow to show up before being able to move on to the next sentence. I believe the timing is based on the time the narrator reads the sentence. For some advanced readers who read fast with their eyes, the wait time can be too long and make the book a bit of a drag. I would also like to see an option to take a picture when the child’s face pops up on the clouds. My girls know about the screen capture buttons on the iPad, so they snapped photos of themselves that way. They had a fantastic time making funny faces and just laughing out loud.
Overall, I think this book is a winner. The combination of interesting characters, beautiful illustrations, and entertaining, brain-stimulating activities made this app very enjoyable and hard to put down. It definitely earns a place in my children’s iPad. A free lite version is available if you want to check it out before buying.
