But Not the Hippopotamus - Boynton

February 9, 2014

By: Carisa Kluver

The Digital Media Diet

A satisfying digital board book for the toddler set ...

But Not the Hippopotamus is the fifth Sandra Boynton book re-imagined for digital by Loud Crow, the same developer that made The Going to Bed Book and the PopOut series. This title has a lot for young children to play with and a delightfully upbeat story about including everyone ... ending with "But YES the hippopotamus!" The print title, published in 1982, has been a beloved board book for pre-readers for decades.

As a digital publication, this app has a similar style to the other Boynton books by Loud Crow, with lots of touchable elements that bounce and wiggle like a true pop-up book. Subtle but polished animations and sound effects round out this storybook in a way that is well-integrated with the original narrative. There are also delightful touches, like balloons that float away and pop if tapped repeatedly. Each page has lovely narration by Meghan Adrian, with highlighting (plus touch-to-hear for individual words), although there is no page guide. The digital enhancements are great for grabbing the attention of little ones but parents and teachers should know that this app could also be overstimulating for some children, especially since the interactivity can be triggered indefinitely.

Overall, this book app is well crafted with simple settings and easy page turning - an intuitive experience that makes you almost forget you are turning digital and not real pages. The short, rhyming text is pitch-perfect for toddlers and preschoolers, creating just the right anticipation for each page as the Hippopotamus appears. A whole new experience of the beloved Boynton books awaits in this app series ... so what are you waiting for? Join the Hippopotamus and say YES!

Highly Recommended.
