What do my insides look like? How does my brain work? Why does my heart beat? What happens to my food after I swallow it? Children are naturally curious about their bodies, and if you are a parent, chances are you have been asked questions like these. My Incredible Body by Zybright, sister company of award winning developer Visible Body, answers all these questions and more by taking children on a journey inside the human body.
Through the use of beautiful, detailed, and medically correct 3D renderings of the human anatomy, children will be able to learn about their bodies like never before. They will be able to go on a self-guided tour or an app guided tour of the body and make virtual dissections. They will be able to go on virtual trips (rocket rides) that will take them inside the body to see, for example, where food, air, and blood travel. They will also be able to watch videos that show how each of the body systems work.
On the self-guided and app-guided tours, children will be able to click on the different body parts and read about or listen to how that specific part works. The descriptions are well-written and make anatomy and physiology very easy to learn. On the right side of the screen, they will see what looks like a full moon, a half moon, and a new moon. These are the “dissection” tools. The full moon shows the entire body part or organ. The half-moon fades that part (makes it transparent) so that children can see if there are any body parts or organs lying posterior or inferior to it. The new moon will hide that part completely, allowing children to get an even better view of the posterior or inferior parts. By pressing and holding on the screen with one finger, children can rotate the body and view it in any angle. With the two finger grip they can zoom in and out. With three fingers, they can pan up, down, left, and right. On the left side of the screen are the icons for the different body systems. Children can view the different systems together or separately by simply clicking on the icons.
The rocket rides are a very fun way for children to learn anatomy and physiology. In this mode, they will be able to see what it is like inside organs. As they travel down the body, they will be able to make stops and take a look around the pharynx, the heart, the liver, and others areas of the body as if they are actually inside it.
The movies are short videos that provide an excellent overview of how each body system works. Children will be able to follow a piece of pizza as it goes down the digestive system, travel with air as it is inhaled, and much, much, more. Together, the four modes of learning (self-guided tour, app-guided tour, rocket ride, and movies) provide a very thorough way of learning about the human body.
My children and I absolutely love this app. My 7 year old can easily navigate it. She enjoys it so much she can spend hours “playing” with it. That said, there are a couple of things I would like to see in future updates. First, I think there should be instructions or a tutorial on how to use the app. The only reason we knew how to pan and dissect is because we have Visible Body’s Anatomy and Physiology app which uses the same navigating system. The other thing I would like to see are more videos including ones with real images. My children, for example, would love to see a video of vocal chords vibrating during speech, a video of a beating heart, and a video of the pupil as it contracts and dilates.
Hands down, My Incredible Body is the best anatomy and physiology app for children that I have seen. It provides children a lot of information without being overwhelming for them. As children go through this app they will learn a lot about the way their body works and will come to the conclusion that they truly are fearfully, wonderfully, and incredibly made.
