Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss

The Digital Media Diet

Do you like green eggs and ham? Find out what Sam-I-Am thinks ...

Green Eggs and Ham is one of many titles to come to the iPad/iPhone from Oceanhouse Media. It is solidly made and takes the emphasis on sight words for 'learner readers' to the next level in this digital version of a Seuss classic. The story is narrated and features the original images from the book.

It also has lots of sound effects, including the sound of chewing and swallowing when Sam-I-Am finally realizes how much he really likes green eggs & ham. My son found this sound delightful, however I did find it pretty unpleasant. I'm not sure if that was the effect they were going for, but it certainly has kid-appeal. And thankfully sound effects can be turned off in the settings menu.

These Dr. Seuss books have no real animation, although most of the items pictured in the story react to a light tap with a visual image of the word with accompanying audio (for example, tap on a cat and the word "cat" appears with audio saying “cat”). These word 'interactions' are literally hidden all over every page. If your kids are starting to learn to read, you will find this book useful & fun, since it is comprised of so many short words that are part of the fundamental vocabulary for early readers.

While this digital book can seem less interactive than other book apps, I appreciate that the developer stayed true to the educational purpose of Seuss. This and several other Seuss titles aimed specifically at children learning to read were developed in an interesting way. According to Wikipedia, "a list was compiled of 348 words that were important for first-graders to recognize, then cut to 250 words and the task was to write a book using only those words. They wanted Seuss to 'bring back a book children can't put down.' Nine months later, using 236 of the words given to him, he completed The Cat in the Hat."

New updates in September of 2012 include the addition of a page guide, additional settings for sound and the ability to record your own narration. These setting also allow for tappable images within the book app to be turned off, a useful feature for both silent reading and in educational settings.

Story Synopsis - Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss

Green Eggs and Ham is a short work of fiction by legendary kids book author Dr. Seuss, in which a very persistent Sam-I-Am repeatedly asks his unnamed friend, in a multiplicity of ways, whether his friend would like ham accompanied by, of all things, green eggs.

As the story begins, Sam's friend is recalcitrant. He tells Sam-I-Am that he "would not like them" in "a box" or "a house," nor with "a fox" or "a mouse," that he "would not eat them here or there," and in fact "would not eat them anywhere."

Yet Sam-I-Am's friend's dogmatic anti-ham stance proves to be fleeting, as during the dramatic climax of the yarn, he suddenly and without warning embraces that which he has scorned to that critical juncture.

Sam-I-Am's epiphany is so profound and his transformation so thorough that from this point forward he embraces the once-loathed food in all its locations -- and, the reader is led to believe, incarnations. His friend now covets the cuisine not only "in a boat" and "on a train," but also "in the dark" and "in a tree."

It is not made clear whether he would go out of his way to eat the tasty eggs and ham treat or whether he would simply accept it if offered on the spot in its varied locations, but the author does make the reader acutely aware, in no uncertain terms, of one vital point: Sam's formerly ham-and-egg-spiting friend has a new perspective on this peculiar manifestation of cured pork and emerald-hued huevos. He likes it. He likes it a lot. [Source: WikiSummaries]
