This short but sweet picture book app by Karen Baicker is aimed at very young readers and listeners, featuring a young African-American girl and her family. It is based on a well-loved print title, published in 2003, followed by a board book version in 2010. With just a few tappable sounds, PicPocket Books has created a faithful digital retelling, with all the charm of a classic picture book. The little girl narrates the story in the first person, sharing scenes with each of her family members, from mom and dad, siblings, grandparents, her uncle, plus friends and neighbors. Each scene shows the older person doing something 'big' like pouring juice, zipping clothes, cooking, holding a book, playing music, riding a bike and more, followed by the little girl saying "I CAN DO IT TOO!"
As a digital offering, this multi-cultural story book is simply made, with no animation and only a handful of sound sprites that are not always intuitive, especially since these interactive sound effects are not found on every page. The artwork, by talented children's book illustrator Ken Wilson-Max, is cheerful with bold colors and simple images that kid's will love. The text of the story is shown in white on black, in a strip above and below the original illustrations. This makes the text nice sized and easy to read, but this solution means the print book's images can't take advantage of the entire screen.
The format may be simple in this app-book presentation, but it is well-made overall. Like other PicPocket releases, it has easy swipe-style page turning, a clear font and highlights word-for-word. An articulate young girl's voice provides the voice-over, giving the story's narration a nice, authentic touch. A couple basic settings allow users to control the audio and highlighting, but additional navigation settings are lacking. It would be nice to see a page guide or at least a home button. Otherwise, this app makes a great resource for library and classroom storytimes, in addition to reading at home. Featuring heart-warming scenes with rich cultural meaning, I Can Do It Too! is the perfect addition to any digital bookshelf.

I Can Do It Too!: To a very young person, big people seem so capable! Daddy pours juice and never spills a drop, Grandma bakes a cake effortlessly, and a next door neighbor rides a bike as if he were born on one. Whatever the activity, this little heroine “wants to do it too!” And so she does- thanks to the love and support of those around her. Is it any surprise that soon she is big enough to pass on loving encouragement to someone even younger? This simple cadence of the words and the direct-to-the-heart art result in a book that recognizes how satisfying growing up surrounded by love can be. [Source: iTunes/Picpocket Books]
