Sleepy Mole's Moving Day by James Scanlon Pty. Ltd.

This is a remarkable little app that lets the reader drive the direction of the story. It stars a little mole, ready for sleep with his teddy bear and striped pajamas. But his nice day's sleep is interrupted by two construction workers digging a hole; now Sleepy Mole has to move on and find a new home. The charming little rodent burrows throughout the story until he finds a new place to sleep.

In digital, there is nothing about the format that requires linear storytelling, so this innovative book allows the reader to choose the direction that the little mole will dig - either up, down, left or right. The effect is very fun. It is even easy to feel as lost as the little mole while choosing Read more …

Gary's Place by Jack Pot Industries LLC

Gary is a gopher with a keen desire to set out on his own in this adorable storybook app written by Rick Walton. Created with Kwiksher, this title is illustrated by Will Terry, a talented artist and articulate blogger about the artist's journey into digital publishing at willterry.blogspot.com. Readers can also see Terry's art in the suspenseful and nearly wordless book app, Monkey & Croc (one of my personal favorites).

On the first page of this app, we meet Gary and his parents. [Note: Readers must tap each character to start the narration, but after this page it starts automatically.] Gary's parents think their underground home is comfy and cozy, but Gary says it's crowded. Read more …

The Pied Piper by Stacking Books by The Candlestick Company, LLC

The Pied Piper by Stacking Books in conjunction with The Candlestick Company, rewrite the timeless classic, to introduce older preschoolers and early elementary students to the art of verse and the origination of idioms. Did you know that the story may have been based on fact? I am not pulling your leg here; it seems that something did go down in Hamelin. As early as in the year of 1284, the story began to appear and soon took on the characteristics of a legend. We may never know for sure what exactly happened; but a church window, a house (built in 1604 and dedicated to “The Piper”), and centuries of retelling this story all point to the importance of a Read more …

A Troop is a Group of Monkeys by LITTLE BAHALIA PUBLISHING LLC

Little Bahalia Publishing's first book app, A Troop is a Group of Monkeys, is a short but sweet title featuring gorgeous illustrations with polished animation and well-crafted interactive elements. Each page has a different animal featured with the proper plural term for a group of each species. From a parliament of owls to a tower of giraffes, children will enjoy learning about the unique (and often comical) names for multiple creatures of any type. Among my child's favorites was the bloat of hippopotami and the quiver of cobras.

The story is simple, but well put together with subtle alliteration and nicely paced rhyming text. Colorful and engaging illustrations come to life with a Read more …

Chipper's Rainy Day by

With polished animation, delightful interactivity and a short but sweet adventure story, Chipper's Rainy Day, has everything a young reader could wish for in a storybook app. Every one of the pages has animated and interactive elements featuring an adorable mouse-character named Chipper.

This gives children a wonderful way to engage with the story. It also gives this app exceptional re-play value. The choices are whimsical, too ... like building a fort Read more …

Rowdy Raccoon and the Turtle Who Wanted to Fly is based on the book of the same name by Donna C. Braymer and illustrated By Shachi Kale. It was published in print in 2009. It is beautifully illustrated and the interactive features are incredible.
