Once Upon a Potty: Boy by Oceanhouse Media, Inc.

Once Upon a Potty, for Boys is based on the print title by Alona Frankel, published in 1975 in Hebrew in an edition she wrote for her son. It has been updated and translated, becoming a timeless classic for potty-training both genders. According to Wikipedia:

The book contains a story, told from the point of view of a mother of a toddler who tries to potty train. This toddler has a different name on different versions of the book (Joshua, Prudence, Naftaly, Ziona…). The story first describes that toddler’s body; He or she has hands to play with, legs to walk with…and in their buttocks they have “a hole to woo-woo from”. The Read more …

The New Potty - Little Critter by Oceanhouse Media, Inc.

The New Potty by Mercer Mayer was published in print in 1992 as part of the Golden Books "Little Sister" series (in collaboration with the author's 3rd wife, Gina). This title is the beloved story about Little Critter's baby sister getting her first potty chair and learning how to use it. At first she just wants to sit on it ... to watch tv & eat dinner ("that was weird" says Little Critter), but soon she's willing to try it out. After a few accidents, she gets better and better, making her family proud.

Many readers have asked, "What kind of animal is Little Critter?" According to Wikipedia, Mercer Mayer did not specify which type of animal Little Critter is, but Read more …

The Lucky Escape HD by PicPocket Books

"The Lucky Escape" is the story of two girls that end up shrinking down and traveling through their brother's digestive system, all the while learning about this important body system.  The print version was released with a CD that narrates the story, read by the author's children.

This is an excellent educational title designed by a Naturopath and mom to educate kids in a fun way about their bodies.  Human Body Detectives (HBD) is a series she created, with "The Lucky Escape" detailing a trip down the digestive system.  It is detailed and medically accurate, with illustrations that are both richly colored and authentic looking depictions of the inside of the body.

I Have to Go!! by Tizio BV

I Have to Go!! is a cute title from the Dutch team "Sieneke & Tineke". The 'story' is about a little one who has to go to bathroom and can't find her potty. She goes from room to room, speculating on where she can go to pee. "Should I do it on the couch?" she wonders. She also considers many other inappropriate places until she remembers her potty is in the bathroom. What a relief.

This book is just the right length for toddlers, although my 4 year old also enjoyed it a lot. Every page has a few unique sounds to be triggered, but nothing that would encourage senseless tapping. A funny little series of clanging noises happens whenever you tap on the little girl, which Read more …

Teddy's Night by Auryn Inc.

Teddy's Night was an instant hit in our house, just as we loved "Teddy's Day".  The interactivity & animation is also well-integrated into the storyline and varied enough to entertain a child for a very long time.  There are so many totally original things to discover in this book, like blocks that you can knock over, a tub you can fill (touch and hold on the faucet), pop-able bubbles you can create by tapping a soap bottle, lights that turn on (or off) and even a memory game in the bathtubs tiles!  There's also a great potty scene with teddy on his own little potty chair next to the little girl.  Tap on either the girl or teddy for some authentic sounding bodily Read more …

Mabel & Lulu : The Real Life Adventures - An Interactive Children's Book for iPad by Apphaus Design Inc

"Mabel, LuLu, adventures right on que" sings this book as you open it. It's VERY catchy, like get-stuck in your head catchy. My son has been humming it all day. Two very cute dogs, Mabel & LuLu, are the main characters in these two stories, along with their 'mom' Beth-Anne.

I say she's the mom because these dogs are definitely the type of pets that are people, even in real life I suspect. That's because Beth-Anne is the name of the developer and it's clear from reading her website that she lives, loves and maybe even daydreams story adventures about her two pups. I'm a cat person by nature, even a bit afraid of dogs sometimes, but I LOVED these two stories. They will appeal not Read more …

Naughty Pony by Nessy

Naughty Pony is a fun interactive storybook app about a little girl and her not-so-nice pony. It is produced by a UK based company that has been making educational software for children since 1999. They work closely "with the Bristol Dyslexia Centre to ensure that all the Nessy titles are especially helpful for dyslexics." This book has a very funny storyline with just the right emphasis on potty-humor (poop, gas, etc.) and bad behavior to make little ones giggle.

Every page in this book has light animations and sound effects that are triggered with the tap of a finger as well as a nice variety of things to do. You can help feed the pony, clean his mane, pick rocks out of this feet, brush Read more …

I really have to go! HD - Piccolo picture books by Unieboek Het Spectrum b.v.

I really have to go! is a digital book with the look and feel of a classic children's picture book. It has playful illustrations and a story that is sure to tickle the funny bone of young & old alike. It features a little boy on an adventurous (and futile) search for a bathroom. His dad asks him to 'hold it' for a minute that turns into much longer. First, they get a flat tire. Then they have to walk home, only to find all the bathrooms in their house occupied. A New Pet by Psichogios Publications

A New Pet is about a dog named Spike.  His owners suddenly come home with a new 'pet' one day. He notices the changes in his owners, like how they only pay attention to the new pet, even though all it does is cry. This new pet is a baby, of course.  And as the story progresses, we see Spike realize he could never hurt the new pet and then discover that he actually likes her. As the baby grows into a little girl, Spike comes to love her and even shares his secret hiding places in the rose bed for burying bones.

The illustrations are hand drawn and the way Spike is depicted is really expressive, almost as if you can see his shock at this new pet who is clearly less fun than he is, Read more …
