A Frog Thing by Oceanhouse Media, Inc.

Based on the very popular 2006 print title by Eric Drachman, A Frog Thing is the kind of storybook that makes for an instant classic. It's about a frog named Frank who wants to fly, despite being told that flying isn't a 'frog thing'. Eventually Frank gets his wish in a creative way that is both satisfying and surprising.

Earlier this week, my Kindergartner came home with the print version of A Frog Thing, having chosen it himself on library day at school. We were both excited to find this app released just a day later for our iPad! It's a perfect digital translation, too, featuring the great narration originally included on an audio CD that accompanied the print title.

Ultimately, this app Read more …

Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose - Dr. Seuss by Oceanhouse Media, Inc.

Thidwick The Big-Hearted Moose makes a great transition from print to digital, with top-notch features from Oceanhouse Media. Enhancements are primarily educational and focused on word recognition. Great narration with highlighting word-by-word reinforces the text and if a child taps on any word, they can hear it spoken again. If you tap on an image in the illustrations, the word will appear with accompanying audio. And as a bonus, if that image is present in the text of the story, the word will highlight again, too.

Most Dr. Seuss OmBooks also aren't animated, but many pages begin by panning over Seuss' classic original artwork, zooming in and out to show off each chunk of text in a Read more …

Blue Hat, Green Hat - Boynton by Loud Crow Interactive Inc.

Blue Hat, Green Hat is another hit by Loud Crow, the same developer that made The Going to Bed Book and the PopOut series. While it is interactive with subtle 'pop-up' style animations, it is also short enough (and accompanied by relaxing piano music) to make it appropriate for settling down at nighttime. However, this title has a lot for kids to play with, too, making it great for any time of day. The print book, published in 1984, is also a chart topper with nearly a hundred 5-Star reviews at Amazon.com.

This app has a similar style to the other Boynton book apps, with lots of touchable elements that bounce slightly like a true pop-up book. There are also delightful touches, like animals Read more …
