Magic Thumbelina by Oleksandr Pogrebniak

Magic Thumbelina is a gorgeously illustrated version of the classic children's story about a little 'thumb' sized girl who goes on a journey among the small creatures of the forest. She meets frogs, a mouse, a mole (whom she almost marries), a swallow she nurses back to health and finally, a forest elf who turns out to be a prince (whom she does marry, of course).

This digital title is lightly animated and interactive with high quality music throughout. It is not narrated and is a bit difficult to read aloud smoothly for want of a bit of polishing in the text. The story follows the tradtional tale but seems to have been poorly edited, missing prepositions and displaying some interesting Read more …

Little Bella's - I Close My Eyes by Out Fit 7 Ltd.

Little Bella is a relatively short, animated book released for the iPhone/iPod only.   This book is often a favorite "last book" at bedtime in our house, since the ending has little Bella falling into bed & going to sleep herself.  We usually avoid overly animated or interactive books before bed, since they can be too stimulating, but the overall effect of the music & dreamy animation is relaxing enough even for nighttime.

Each page has little Bella stating in her cute Australian accent, "I close my eyes and I am ..." followed by 12 different imaginative statements, ranging from climbing the tallest tree to becoming a dolphin diving in the ocean.  My son was Read more …

Giggly Spider by B.H.E. Peels

This short, sweet digital title is not narrated but features beautiful illustrations and just the right touch of animation and interactivity for toddlers and preschoolers. Each page has an engaging image of an animal, insect or bird and then a second page with that creature's home (or bed). The interactivity is simple but delightful, from helping a spider create its web to splattering a pig with mud. In the end, the reader pulls the covers over a sleeping child, a perfect way to set the mood for bedtime.

As a digital title this app doesn't have a lot of settings, just arrow page turning and a way to reset the book at the end. A page guide and home button would be nice additions, but for Read more …

Quigley the Caterpillar by Nation9, Inc.

Quigley the Caterpillar is an ebook whose appeal lies in its winning story rather than flashy animations, sound effects or games. Author Erin Turnley's story and Pamela Goodman's illustrations are beautifully brought to life as an app by Nation9, an artist's collective. It's a simple story with a positive message which parents will enjoy sharing with their children.

The star of the story is of course Quigley, a nice green caterpillar with 100 legs. He does what caterpillars mostly do - eat leaves. One day Quigley encounters a butterfly and is bewitched by her beauty and grace. Apparently no one had "the talk" with Quigley as he has no idea what changes await him.

The Little Bug by Jaclyn Littman

The Little Bug by Jaclyn Littman is a stellar work of art created by this MICA grad student as her MFA thesis project! Wow, glad to see students and schools getting up to speed with tech and all the possibilities of graphic design in the future. The Little Bug app beautifully showcases original cut-paper illustrations, engaging interactivity, and fab narration.

This is a class app! Oh, and did we mention the original sound track? Joshua Cipolla is responsible for the jaunty music. This app was designed for ages 3 and up, but don’t let that stop you from checking it out, it is virtually for all ages. The Little Bug is a terrific lesson Read more …

Moonlight Hide and Seek is another one of a kind storybook by Weily Apps that is sensational. It teaches simple counting with adding and subtracting within the storyline. Set in the country at night, kids have the opportunity to interact with a variety of night creatures. Play involves picking an animal and a number and finding out how many other animals are hiding using a base of ten. Kids have plenty of choices to help navigate the story, and the results are that no repeat play is quite the same.
