Tacky and the Winter Games by Oceanhouse Media, Inc.

The winter games have come to the nice icy land ... and Tacky and his brood are competing against rivals from the Highlands, Lowlands and more. But will they win a medal? It seems at first that having an 'odd bird' on their team is working against them. In the end, Tacky's unconventional approach is a winning one, although not before several hilarious plot twists.

Like other omBooks from Oceanhouse Media, this title is solidly made with simple swipe-style page turning. It would benefit from the addition of a page guide, but is otherwise easily navigated by little fingers. The story, by Helen Lester, is beloved in print, published in 2005. The digital version is no exception, only Read more …

Cars 2 World Grand Prix Read and Race by Disney Publishing Worldwide Applications

Many parents remember last summer as one that belonged to Toy Story 3. Well, this summer is definitely in the grips of Cars 2 at our house, so this app was an instant hit with my little boy. Told with narration that mimics an announcer at the racetrack, Cars 2 World Grand Prix Read and Race is a storybook with an extra children won't soon forget - a racing game bundled into the app.

The storybook covers the plot twists involving the races in Tokyo, Italy and England (plus the trip back to Radiator Springs) and less about the spy mystery (which is the emphasis of the other Cars 2 book app, reviewed earlier this summer). After this trip through the movie's major plot points, Read more …

Great Snail Race, Kids Stories from Tilly's Numbertown by 123 Number Fun Pty Ltd

Tilly Two in Number Town is part of a series of app books by Jane Hague that has recently been published in the app store. This Australian series is set in a town with many interesting characters - all numbered. For instance there is a nurse, Trixie Six and Policeman Ernie Eight. The main character of this story is Tilly Two, a little girl in Mrs. Smart's class. The setting is 'show & tell' plus a lesson on 'mini-beasts' (bugs and little animals). One of the children brings a snail for show & tell and Mrs. Smart decides the class should have an old fashioned snail race the next day.

Tilly's snail, a little guy named Toffee, gets the number two of course. All the children cheer the Read more …

Cars 2 Storybook Deluxe by Disney Publishing Worldwide Applications

Have you caught the Cars 2 movie yet? Well, my little boy was delighted to help me review the new digital book app by the same title, especially after seeing the movie. The app is a packed offering that includes a storybook, puzzles, painting pages and two small mini games. If you liked Cars 2 or plan to see it soon, this is sure to be a hit with your little Disney fan, too.

The movie plot points are highlighted throughout the book, but it could be difficult to follow if you aren't familiar with the film. For my little boy, I think seeing the book before the movie gave him a lot of fun anticipation, but he didn't fully understand the way the plot was connected until after we saw Cars 2 in Read more …

The Really Groovy Story of the Tortoise and the Hare by Beluga Limited

From Belugaboo Books, this app features a quirky twist on the familiar story about a race between the slowest and fastest creatures. The Really Groovy Story of the Tortoise and the Hare invites young readers to cheer along as perseverance pays off. Published in print in 2011, this fun tale is told in well-crafted rhyme by Kristyn Crow with Christina Forshay's richly drawn illustrations. The story is 'groovy', with fun dialogue that gives it a more modern feel, although it's a little bit more circa 1970, than 21st century.

The moral is intact from the traditional tale of the tortoise and the hare, along with hints of "country mouse, city mouse". A sporty hare is shown Read more …

The Tortoise and The Hare - An Interactive Children's Book by TabTale by TabTale LTD

The Tortoise and The Hare - An Interactive Children's Book by TabTale is a short but packed version of the story of a speedy hare and a slow but determined tortoise competing in a race. It is told in rhyming verse with lots of interactive animation for little fingers to tap.

This interactivity, paired with the colorful illustrations, captures a child's attention, certainly, but it is almost too much on each page, making it difficult to follow the storyline at times. There are a dozen or more elements on every page that can be tapped to trigger a variety of simple animations, like animals that bounce or disappear into windows or their shells. There are even flowers that move with the motion Read more …

Collins Big Cat: My Bike Ride Story Creator by Harper Collins Publishers Limited

I really wanted to like this title, even love it, given that it is currently free and from Haper Collins, one of the world's largest publishing companies. It is part of the "Big Cat" series of apps, all of which include a specialized 'story creation' tool. There are several other apps in the series, including others I enjoyed, although none of them properly work in story creation mode.

But this title also gets very confusing with its basic interactive elements, taking a lovely (although quite simple) title from a print publication in 2006 and reissuing it in digital in a way that makes it nearly un-usable. It is currently free, along with a number of other titles in this series, so worth a Read more …
