The Beginner's Bible by Zondervan Publishers

Our family has incorporated the print version of The Beginner’s Bible into our homeschooling activities since my oldest was in Kindergarten.  This modern classic of easy-to-read, chronologically arranged Bible stories spans from Creation to Revelation in 90 different Bible stories with bright, cartoon-style drawings.  We have in fact, worn out a couple of copies by reading through them out loud for a first level of Bible familiarity with our preschoolers and also as a reader for my oldest when she was starting to read independently.

Now this much-loved resource is available as an interactive iPad app complete with read-along narration, coloring Read more …

KidsMg Easter Special Edition by Portegno SA

KidsMag from Portegno Apps is a fantastic series of digital 'activity books', including a short but cute storybook in each issue. This issue has the children listening to a bedtime story about Easter. It features a land of bunny 'egg painters' ... a group of helpers not unlike Santa's elves. The main character is just learning his trade and gets lots of inspiration from his siblings before finding his own style.

As a digital offering, this title is solidly made with ample settings to navigate and adjust the app's audio. The story and all activity pages have narration, so even pre-readers can enjoy this app. Illustrations are simple computer graphics but colorful and engaging in a Read more …

Noah's Ark - An Interactive Children's Bible Tale by TabTale by Oran Kushnir

Noah's Ark - An Interactive Children's Bible Tale by TabTale is a nice version of the story of Noah and the Great Flood. It is told in rhyming verse with light animation and lots of interactive elements for little fingers to tap. This engaging interactivity features animals that bounce into and out of the ark when tapped, expressive Old Testament characters and even an Ark that gets built before your eyes.

The story is well tailored for kids with all the important plot points of the flood story. It is also nicely enhanced with simple animations. The animation isn't spectacular, limited to movements up and down of the images, but it still manages to engage young readers in the tale Read more …

Noah by AddSubtract LLC

This is a very short book app with only 10 pages, but it does a nice job summarizing the flood story with interactive and animated pages about each step in Noah's preparations. Readers can harvest vegetables for the journey and pair the animals before they enter the arc.

This app is solidly made with simple arrow page turns and an easy to read font that underlines word-by-word as it is narrated. Animated elements have a nice variety of interactions for young readers that emphasize the plot points of this ancient story. Both narration and illustrations round out this app for a polished presentation.

Overall this is a lovely, although very brief, retelling of the old testament story of Noah. Read more …

Children's Bible Games & Activities for your Kids and School by Barcelona Multimedia

I'm not a follower of organized religion but I had a religious upbringing. The aspect of it I enjoyed the most was reading the Bible, so I was pleased when developer Barcelona Multimedia asked me to review Children's Bible Games & Activities for your Kids and School. One of my 'A' levels was in Biblical Studies, and I still remember writing essays on the passages in Genesis which, according to the Graf-Wellhausen source hypothesis, were from the J source (which presents an anthropomorphic view of God). Thankfully, this app is much more accessible and dare I say fun.

The app is free to download and has three modules planned for both the New and Old Testament. Only one module, Birth of Read more …

The First Chirstmas is a short but nicely presented storybook about the birth story of Christ. With precious illustrations that show Mary and Joseph as child-like plus easy to read text narrated by a professional child voice-artist, this Christmas story is one that will engage children and please parents equally. Text highlights as narrated, helping to reinforce language learning. The book has no animation but does have lightly interative elements - mostly sound effects for the animals in the barn. Perfect for children learning about the religious background for the celebration of Christmas.

The Berenstain Bears Learn to Share by Oceanhouse Media

The Berenstain Bears Learn to Share by Stan & Jan Berenstain was published in print for the first time in 1992.  This version has the addition of Mike Berenstain as an author and was re-published in 2010 as part of the Christian-themed Living Lights series with a focus on faith. This book focuses on sharing - from 2 Corinthians 9:7: For God loves a cheerful giver. The Living Lights series is designed to "help children learn how God wants them to live every day."

Sister Bear tells this story, about how she has lots of playthings she doesn't like to share but that sometimes it's more fun to play with someone else. She finds Brother Bear and lots of friends to organize into a Read more …

The Berenstain Bears Love Their Neighbors by Oceanhouse Media

The Berenstain Bears Love Their Neighbors by Jan & Mike Berenstain was published in print in 2009.  it's part of the Little Lights Berenstain Bear series that "helps children learn how God wants them to live every day." This book has as its central message the need to be good neighbors and appreciate people for their actions, not their appearances.

This book received mostly good reviews for the print version at There was one review that does point out a slight inconsistency, though. If you (or your child) are fans of the whole series of Berenstain Bears books, it should be noted that in this book the history of the Bogg Brothers is bit overlooked. The brothers are Read more …

The Bible BooClips - Creation by Castle-Builders (IL) Ltd.

Nicely narrated and featuring small inset videos that can even be viewed in 3D (blue/red glasses required), Bible BooClips is one bible education series your child won't soon forget! The series covers the creation to the point where Adam & Eve are cast out of the garden.

There are over a dozen computer animated video clips to go along with simplified text perfect for young readers 6-9, although younger kids will also enjoy having the story narrated. The version from Genesis is the one where Eve is created from Adam's rib (the more popular & traditional version), although the 1st version of the creation story, where man & woman are created equally is my personal preference Read more …

The Berenstain Bears Do Their Best by Oceanhouse Media

The Berenstain Bears Do Their Best by Stan & Jan Berenstain was published in print for the first time in 1992.  This version has the addition of Mike Berenstain as an author and was re-published in 2010.  Also added was an overtly religious story behind papa's ability to help build the kite for the kids to enter a kite flying contest.  I found the religious references surprising since the title didn't indicate anywhere that it was about God. Not that this is a bad thing for a book to emphasize, but why hide it from readers in the promotional info in the AppStore?

Many of the other Berenstain books with religious themes are much more explicit about their Read more …

ThruHeaven+ by Constantia Maria Oomen

"You used to live in heaven," begins this book, explaining that all souls start there before you are born and end there after you die. Written by Constantia Oomen who has previously published books for adults about out-of-body experiences and the astral plane. This makes for a rather unique iPad book to meet a very specific need.

This little title covers topics like out-of-body experiences and what happens when you die (or are near-death) with a warm but distinctly new-age spirituality that is worthy of a preview before sharing it with youngsters. The text is presented in a poem like way over a series of pages with inspirational photographs and classical music. The book is not Read more …

The Nativity Story by Read & Record by A S Howie

This book app is from a collection of short, simple stories that stand out most for the ability to easily record your own narration. For this holiday-themed title, I was able to record my voice reading the book in less than 5 minutes using very intuitive controls within the app. The app also has nice background music, but it only plays on the title page ... otherwise the app is silent. There is also no interactivity or animation. The story itself is nicely illustrated with simple computer-drawn graphics. While lacking 'wow' factor, these 'read & record' apps are excellent choices for recording narration by a loved one.
