Fierce Grey Mouse HD by Tizio BV

Prepare yourself for one very cute mouse story. This book opens with a little grey mouse removing the word 'little' to put the word 'fierce' in its place for the title page. The letters are like cut-outs from magazine copy, giving the book a whimsical quality. The illustrations are hand-drawn and color-drenched, creating the perfect backdrop to the story. Every page is also filled with small but delightful animated elements triggered by tapping on the characters.

Little grey mouse wants to be fierce. So he lifts weights, practices pouncing and perfects his roar. Then he hides in a tree to wait for someone to scare. His good friends come by first, calling for their little mouse friend to Read more …

A Present for Milo: A Touch-and-Surprise Storybook by Ruckus Media Group

A Present for Milo is one of the best books I've come across for children under age 6. The words in the book are very simple and the illustrations tell the story as much as the text. Milo is a cat, chasing a mouse in the book, but it never feels like a dangerous chase. In fact, they seem to be having the time of their lives! The reader gets to be part of this adventure, triggering whimsical 'reactions' from the two charming characters, as well as bringing other items in the pictures to life with seemingly endless possibilities.

This delightful interactivity is enhanced by animation that doesn't steal the show. This is particularly nice in a title for the very young and makes this book an Read more …

Auryn HD - Teddy's Day by Auryn, Inc

This is a very cute story appropriate for the youngest of kids and yet touching in a way parents will enjoy, too. The narration is a little girl's voice, but still clear and easy to listen to. Each page highlights some of the interactive elements, which include animations, music and many extras like a puzzle and even a coloring page that let's you post your Read more …

Three Blind Mice HD by PicPocket Books

This ebook app is based on Wooleycat's Musical Theater, a book with audio cd that was previously published in print. The book contained 10 stories with songs, and this tale of "Three Blind Mice on Vacation in Africa" is one of the story-songs from the original 2003 edition.

The song and story are whimsical, telling a variation on the fable of 3 blind men and an elephant. Each blind man (or mouse in this case) touches a different part of the animal, and all mistake it for something else. The story is often used as a analogy for the importance of communication and why we need to see the 'whole picture' to really understand something.

As a musical tale, this storybook is very catchy. The Read more …

Willie Mouse HD by Take 2 Ventures LLC

This cute title from PicPocket Books is based on the story & illustrations from Alta Tabor's classic picture book, published in 1920. Willie mouse is determined to get to the moon, so he heads out on a journey that takes him past many other creatures, who he asks for help. "The moon is made of green cheese, my mother says so," reports Willie to each of the animals he asks for assistance.

Each character tells Willie that the moon is too far away for a little mouse to travel, and that it isn't made of 'green cheese'. But Willie is determined, traveling until night-time. He has a snack and falls asleep, waking when the moon is high in the sky. Then Willie is grabbed by an Read more …

Max the mouse with (almost) perfect manners by Ave!Comics Production

This is an interesting book. It has an engaging and funny story despite an odd technical layout for an iPad book. If you have read many books on the iPad, this book initially has an unconventional interface that takes a little getting used to. It can be read by paging through the book without narration or it can also be essentially 'played' as a video that is inset on the screen in a window that is slightly smaller than the full screen view.

The book also includes some complicated settings that I didn't find necessary to enjoy the book - something called 'White Mask' and 'Transparency', plus settings to make the picture even smaller than the inset view. I found the book a bit touchy to set Read more …

Magic Thumbelina by Oleksandr Pogrebniak

Magic Thumbelina is a gorgeously illustrated version of the classic children's story about a little 'thumb' sized girl who goes on a journey among the small creatures of the forest. She meets frogs, a mouse, a mole (whom she almost marries), a swallow she nurses back to health and finally, a forest elf who turns out to be a prince (whom she does marry, of course).

This digital title is lightly animated and interactive with high quality music throughout. It is not narrated and is a bit difficult to read aloud smoothly for want of a bit of polishing in the text. The story follows the tradtional tale but seems to have been poorly edited, missing prepositions and displaying some interesting Read more …

Mousey Howsee and the Rescuers by Realverus UAB

Mousey Housee is one of those book apps that has a lot of unique and innovative aspects. There are video segments tucked within the pages, interactive elements that tie nicely into the storyline and even variations in the book based on the time of day and weather. The app also includes an interactive page with a cell phone where the reader gets to dial the number for emergency rescue of Mousey Housee.

This app features very light animations triggered through tapping. These animations are cute, although not especially related to the storyline. They are also often 'highlighted' in a greyish box that seems unpolished based on my experience with other book apps. The variety of interactions Read more …

Mousefish by Jake MacMullin

This isn't a book so much as a mini-game/activity for very young kids.  It is engaging and fun to 'flip' (or slide in the case of the iPad), the three different segments of each body to mix and match.  Create a mouserpillar-octopus, like I did above, or one of dozens of other combinations.  No audio, text or extras.

This little book is basically just an iPad version of a flip book, featuring a caterpillar, parrot, octopus, fish and mouse.  The illustrations are rich and have a sepia-tone quality, like antique paper.

There is no other interactivity except to flip the pieces to create dozens of funny creatures.  A modern take on the flip-book, in touchable Read more …

Taby the Little Mouse by PT.Nightspade Multi Kreasi

Taby the Little Mouse is visually enchanting as a digital book and has really wonderful interactivity. It also has high quality music (although on a 'loop') and beautiful illustrations. It is very well executed as an app, with easy page turning and a very intuitive interface. The story also has a simple and elegant quality to it that was initially appealing.

The unique style of interactivity involves dragging and dropping images. Each page starts out with a beautiful background image and several outlined elements. At the bottom of the screen a bar appears with several small icons. The child then touches and drags the little icons to fit them into the scene. When you release the icon over Read more …

The Pied Piper by Stacking Books by The Candlestick Company, LLC

The Pied Piper by Stacking Books in conjunction with The Candlestick Company, rewrite the timeless classic, to introduce older preschoolers and early elementary students to the art of verse and the origination of idioms. Did you know that the story may have been based on fact? I am not pulling your leg here; it seems that something did go down in Hamelin. As early as in the year of 1284, the story began to appear and soon took on the characteristics of a legend. We may never know for sure what exactly happened; but a church window, a house (built in 1604 and dedicated to “The Piper”), and centuries of retelling this story all point to the importance of a Read more …

Moo Said Morris by Digital Leaf Ltd.

The latest offering from Digital Leaf is a winner. Moo Said Morris opens to the home screen, where users have the choice of clicking on settings or starting the story. There are two other options for “Your Sounds” and “Record,” collectively called “Mootown Records,” that are not accessible until all 14 slices of cheese are found within the story. Settings allow users to reset the app to new purchase settings, which is nice for a home with multiple children or for kiddos who love the hunt and want to find all of the cheese again. This area also contains a help section, additional apps by Digital Leaf, books from Digital Leaf and credits.

Moonlight Hide and Seek by Weily Apps

Moonlight Hide and Seek is another one of a kind storybook by Weily Apps that is sensational. It teaches simple counting with adding and subtracting within the storyline. Set in the country at night, kids have the opportunity to interact with a variety of night creatures. Play involves picking an animal and a number and finding out how many other animals are hiding using a base of ten. Kids have plenty of choices to help navigate the story, and the results are that no repeat play is quite the same. On each page is a counting line, which would be fun to make up as a tangible for kids to cipher with while reading the story. Included are interesting facts about the Read more …
