Magnus the Magnetic Dog by Julian Damy

Magnus the Magnetic Dog is a beautifully illustrated and charming story from Julian Damy, created with Demibooks Composer. This app is billed as the first title in a series and called, "A New Friend". In this touching story, we meet Magnus the dog and learn about his fear of storms. His bravery inexplicably sets in motion a series of events that lead him to be struck by lightning. This lovable terrier isn't hurt, however, but his life is definitely about to change in a big way! Not only does he become 'magnetic' and attract unwanted metal objects of every kind, but he also manages to attract something more rare - a true friend.

Mabel & Lulu : The Real Life Adventures - An Interactive Children's Book for iPad by Apphaus Design Inc

"Mabel, LuLu, adventures right on que" sings this book as you open it. It's VERY catchy, like get-stuck in your head catchy. My son has been humming it all day. Two very cute dogs, Mabel & LuLu, are the main characters in these two stories, along with their 'mom' Beth-Anne.

I say she's the mom because these dogs are definitely the type of pets that are people, even in real life I suspect. That's because Beth-Anne is the name of the developer and it's clear from reading her website that she lives, loves and maybe even daydreams story adventures about her two pups. I'm a cat person by nature, even a bit afraid of dogs sometimes, but I LOVED these two stories. They will appeal not Read more …

How Rocket Learned to Read – by Tad Hills by Random House Digital, Inc.

The 2010 New York Times bestselling title, How Rocket Learned to Read is one of those paper books that makes a great interactive app, especially with the thoughtful enhancements from Random House Kids. Not only is it lightly animated with nicely tailored interactive elements, but these additions rarely distract from what is essentially a beautifully constructed story. Tapping the page causes Rocket's tail to wag or his eyes to blink, but most enhancements focus on the young reader. Parents, teachers & librarians will appreciate the educational features, like tap-to-hear for individual words, along with highlighting word for word in time with the lovely narration by Hope Davis.

Millie Was Here, Book 1: Meet Millie by MegaPops LLC

Millie Was Here is a short but absolutely adorable book about an ordinary dog with extraordinary capabilities. The app has great background music, delightful narration and a charming interactive interface that will please adults as much as children. The story, while slight at only 8 pages, is humorous, including lots of typical dog 'shenanigans' like pushing food into the corners of the couch & refusing to eat anything but bacon.

A cute extra is included that involves hunting for a hidden sticker on every page. The other interactive elements are the real star of this show, though. You can pull tabs and slide levers that respond with crisp sound effects, revealing Millie's many secrets. Read more …

Dear Zoo by Pan Macmillan

Based on the classic 1982 Rod Campbell title, Dear Zoo is an adorable and beautifully enhanced book app that takes the very best of a traditional 'lift-the-flap' title in print and brings it to digital seamlessly. Children will enjoy this story, about a child who writes to the zoo to send a new pet, but each animal is not quite right for different reasons. A fun matching game is also included, letting kids match the animals in the book to the words used to describe them - like "too scary" or "too big". Eventually a perfect pet is sent to the youngster, one that is just right.

This app is well made and intuitive to use, but it does lack some of the settings and features that book app reader Read more …

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by KIWA International Ltd

Hairy Maclary is a cute terrier mutt who stars in a series of popular books by New Zealand author, Lynley Dodd. This title is the first in the series, published in print in 1983. The story is told in rhyming verse and has a very simple plot, about Hairy Maclary and his doggie friends on a 'trot' around town. While the story is simple, the combination of expressive words, delightful illustrations and polished narration in this app edition, nears digital perfection.

Light animation makes the animals come to life, along with a tiny bit of interactivity in the form of sound effects, mostly barking. The enhancements are fun, but simple enough to make this a great bedtime title. The Read more …

UP: My name is Dug by Disney Publishing Worldwide Applications

Disney Pixar’s movie UP was one of my favorite movies the year it came out.  I loved the whole story and Ellie reminded me a bit of my adventurous daughter – with the crazy red hair and all!  And what isn’t to like about Dug, the silly dog who wants to help his master any way possible.  Dug reminds me of our dog as he is a tad goofy like him!

So it was with some excitement to hear that Disney Pixar released a fun app called UP: My Name Is Dug.  The story was written by Kiki Thorpe and illustrated by Ronnie del Carmen.  I like that the illustrations are hand-drawn and you can see the similarity with the movie but it is done in such a way that Read more …

Auracle HD - Miko "Wants a Dog" by Auryn, Inc

The Miko series, by talented author Brigitte Weninger, has been among my child's favorites in print for many years, published in the past decade. I especially love the beautiful illustrations of Stephanie Roehe that pair so nicely with the sweet stories in this series. In this title, Miko is desperate to have a dog. "Mom, can I pleeeeease have a real dog?" begs the little mouse, hoping his mother will change her mind. When his mother reminds Miko that since no one is home at their house during the day, a dog would get much too lonely.

Luckily, just as little Miko is wallowing in his doglessness, he hears the sounds of a real dog nearby. Across the fence, he Read more …

Maid Marian Muffins by Maid Marian Muffins LLC

The book stars a quirky Brooklynite with a hankering for an old-fashioned blueberry muffin done right. She and her faithful canine, Marvin, search far and wide for the perfect baked goods in Brooklyn. Finding no muffin tasty enough to satisfy her craving, Marian embarks on a hilarious adventure to make her very own culinary masterpieces.

The final recipe that results is so sublime that Marian & Marvin decide to make a business out of delivering her muffins all over town. She even builds a 'muffin-mobile' - a bike with Read more …

Biscuit's Birthday by zuuka incorporated

This is an adorable book based on a print 'early reader' series, popular over the last decade. In this title, little Biscuit is having a birthday. Thankfully turning a year older doesn't have to mean growing up for this perpetual puppy! His mistress has planned a party, inviting his cat & dog friends to enjoy treats, play games and open presents.

Text highlights as narrated in this short title perfect for young learner readers. Simple, but polished animations and interactivity highlight story elements nicely. There is also a selection of extras including coloring pages, memory game, sticker book and puzzles. These extras are basic but well made, making this otherwise short title full of Read more …

Hairy Maclary, Scattercat by Penguin New Zealand Pty Ltd

Hairy Maclary is turning 30! This cute terrier mutt stars in a series of popular books by New Zealand author, Lynley Dodd. First published in 1983, the short, rhyming titles follow the antics of a quaint village, with everything revolving around the personalities of some very cute pets. Featuring repetition and simple sentences, these are great early readers, although the proper names of the animals are complex (e.g. Greywacke Jones, Pimpernel Pugh, Slinky Malinki).

No Dogs Allowed by Tizio BV

This title is beautifully illustrated by Chantal Bourgonje and created originally for a digital format. The story tells about the 'no dog' ... a creature that is both magical and elusive. Signs all around may say 'no dogs allowed' but only a few lucky children will ever really see this fascinating creature.

Told in rhyming verse, this storybook has light animated interactivity. There are also two coloring pages included based on the book. This title is exceptionally well-made, with settings for a page-guide, volume controls and language options that include not only Dutch but also two different dialects for the English narration, both UK & US. The Adventures of Puppup: Lost at the Zoo by Fletcher Grayson

The Adventures of Puppup: Lost at the Zoo from Graymedia Productions, tells the tale of old Puppup, a puppy toy softie, reminiscing about a big adventure trip to the zoo with his girl Julia and her Dad, where he meets a wonderful bunch of friendly animals who help him out. It brings to mind elements of both Finding Nemo and Toy Story but Fletcher Grayson's story is wholly original.

The most striking thing about this interactive book is the illustrations, and I'm not really sure how to describe them. They are a really visually appealing mélange of real photographic images that have been richly textured and artistically rendered with paint strokes and other Impressionistic effects. Read more …

Around the World with Lilup by Mythos Machine LLC

Lilup is a dog that is so fluffy he just floats away one day. On his journey, he visits many parts of the world by flying over and then gently landing to visit the wild animals below. Then he returns home to rest & dream of his adventures. He soars in the sky with birds, glides over ice, plays with several animals, splashes in the water and even joins in on a hunt.

Many of these adventures offer the reader the chance to interact with Lilup or the other animals by tapping or tilting the device. The scene with the penguins sliding on the ice and then 'huddling' together were my little boy's favorites, always making him giggle. None of these interactions are especially animated, but Read more …

A New Pet by Psichogios Publications

A New Pet is about a dog named Spike.  His owners suddenly come home with a new 'pet' one day. He notices the changes in his owners, like how they only pay attention to the new pet, even though all it does is cry. This new pet is a baby, of course.  And as the story progresses, we see Spike realize he could never hurt the new pet and then discover that he actually likes her. As the baby grows into a little girl, Spike comes to love her and even shares his secret hiding places in the rose bed for burying bones.

The illustrations are hand drawn and the way Spike is depicted is really expressive, almost as if you can see his shock at this new pet who is clearly less fun than he is, Read more …

Auryn HD – I, Trixie, who is dog by Auryn, Inc

"Bliss to you. Bliss to you! Is me, who is dog. Trixie Koontz, happy dog," begins this tale told by one tail-waggingly happy canine. In between writing chilling thrillers for adult readers, author Dean Koontz has been busy over the past decade loving one very special dog named Trixie, who is the inspiration for this delightful digital title. I find this softer side of Koontz very appealing, producing a series of lovely children's titles in print. Trixie, a beautiful Labrador, tells this story in the first-person (or first-dog to be precise).

"Dog is the best of the best things to be," Trixie tells the reader, explaining all the wonderful aspects of her doggie life. She has a friend Read more …

Pedro & Marg by Heritage Language, LLC.

When I was in High School, my French teacher would reward us with comic books and story books written in French. They were always so exotic and fun to explore. Little did we know that tackling these stories taught us much more about the language and culture than our text books.

The stories contained in Pedro & Marg, by Heritage Language, are like taking a trip to a Latin American country. The app, based on the books by the same name, are rich in details describing the culture and customs of family life, and are a phenomenal resource for learning Spanish or English. It is truly impressive how well these story books are laid out, and how thoughtful the developers are in terms of Read more …

Jingle All The Way HD by Hallmark Cards, Inc.

Jingle is an adorable husky pup that loves all the children who go to Pineville Elementary School. But Jingle doesn't have a home of his own. He follows the children all the way to their bus stops and doors but when they tell him to be a good dog and 'go home' he doesn't have anywhere to go. The story has a heartwarming ending, though, courtesy of Santa's intervention. This Hallmark book app is intended to work in conjunction with their 'story buddy' stuffed animal of Jingle, but other than a brief mention of the toy at the beginning of the book, this book app is delightful all by itself. Koto Go Silence by Daniel Shneor

Koto is a dog with a rich fantasy life that we learn about in this digital title. It alternates between highly animated scenes and a more simple style of two-color line drawings with the story's text. Nice narration and sound effects round out this title, although it is not an easy one to read without the voice-over.

In the text of the story we learn about what Koto imagines he is hearing, as he pictures spirits, monsters, witches and dragons. After the final narrated segment, a short animated video plays showing that the real sounds are coming from things like the washing machine, television, and just the wind. The artistic style of the two story elements is very different, as Koto goes Read more …

Maggie and the Perfect Puppy by Brighter Minds

This is a cute and very short little book with light animation. It is about a little girl, Maggie, who is going to pick out her first puppy. She has some extraordinary expectations of the pup, wanting a dog that is purple with polka-dots and has a rainbow colored tongue. He will also smell like cinnamon rolls and have long yellow hair for tying bows. Oh, and add to that duck feet, butterfly wings and a unicorn horn. When Maggie finally gets to the group of puppies to choose from she looks around and then sees her perfect pup, purple as can be. We never do find out if he has all her other criteria met, but perhaps he is perfect in all those ways, too.

The book is nicely narrated with Read more …

Dragon and Wolf - An Interactive Children`s Book by Sergey Kochugov

Dragon and Wolf Treasure is a storybook about two little boys who go on an imaginative adventure. It is filled with colorful illustrations that are really gorgeous, along with lots of lightly animated and interactive elements that are polished and mostly story-related. The app is also solidly made, with great settings that let you choose any page and even expand the text boxes for easier reading. So why such a low rating overall? It's simple - this storybook was originally created for a Russian speaking audience (see the Russian version under 'other versions' tab above) but has not been well translated. Pages can be moved forward or backward by tapping the page arrows, swiping left or right or by choosing from the page selection.
