Young music lovers (and their parents) are in for a treat with A Jazzy Day: Swinging with the BIG BAND ... an animated, interactive and enriching musical tale about one hip cat 'dad' taking his cool-cat kittens to see the big band play. All of the musicians are animated animal characters, beautifully illustrated and instructive as they demonstrate each of their instruments. Learn about the different sections of the band, from rhythm to horns and even the role of the conductor.

This tale is simple but well-crafted, describing the sounds and images that make up complex jazz melodies. When they meet the raccoon playing the bass, it says, "Close your eyes, do you hear the bass walking?" The Read more …

The Strange & Wonderful World of Ants by Amos Latteier

5-Star Re-Review [Originally published January 13, 2011] The Strange & Wonderful World of Ants is one of very few titles given 5 stars on this site. And that was before this substantial update. The book is now truly phenomenal for an educational ebook. It is, in my opinion, one of the best examples for developers who would like to create innovative non-fiction ebook apps.

This update includes narration for the easiest reading level, making this a title that is versatile enough for even young pre-readers while still being engaging for older readers and even adults. Unless you are an entomologist, you will likely learn something new about ants while reading this book. The Read more …

It is enchanting simply to watch a child play with this app, delighting in each new discovery about their natural world.

Rounds: Franklin Frog by Nosy Crow Limited

Rounds: Franklin Frog, by Nosy Crow, is their first foray into non-fiction literature and they have done such a brilliant job, it reads more like a storybook than a nonfiction piece. It is beyond a doubt simply darling, and what we like best is the completely calming aura that comes from combining soothing background music with the exceptional scenes from a kids-eye view of nature. What the children liked best were the circles to encourage interactivity. The all time favorite was freeing the tadpole from his egg. The book gracefully follows the life cycle of a frog with gorgeous illustrations which focus on circles. Every on-screen element is a circle or a portion of a circle Read more …

The story is simple, but well put together with subtle alliteration and nicely paced rhyming text. Colorful and engaging illustrations come to life with a Read more …

A Shiver of Sharks by LITTLE BAHALIA PUBLISHING LLC

This is Little Bahalia Publishing's sequel to Julie Hedlund's first book app, A Troop is a Group of Monkeys. This title focuses on the creatures of the sea, featuring Pamela Baron's gorgeous illustrations with light but polished animation and well-crafted interactive elements. Each page has a different animal grouping shown with the proper plural term for a group of each marine species.

From a swarm of eels to a herd of seahorses, children will enjoy learning about the unique (and often comical) names for scores of sealife that go way beyond your usual school of fish. Among my favorites was the smack of jellyfish and fever of stingrays, plus the lovely narration is there Read more …

The Professor Garfield apps from Infinite Learning Lab, a popular non-profit foundation with a great website for kids content, is one of those free series that came out early in the launch of the iPad. So I decided to just search the app store for other "Garfield" content in the hopes of treating my 6-year old to something fun on Christmas morning. When I discovered the four-app series from Paws Inc. under the education category, and free, I was truly stunned. These four totally FREE apps Read more …

ThinkAboutIt 1 by Enable Training and Consulting, Inc.

This non-fiction title is chock-full of interesting facts and inspiration for young philosophers aged 6-10+. Featuring facts and activities for young learners in elementary school, this app presents the basics of philosophical thought for the very young. The format, digitally, is more like an eBook (iBooks/Kindle) vs an app with interactive elements.

Children can tap for more information, to hear the page narrated or turn to the next page. There is no animation or other 'special effects' which may disappoint some users of the iPad. However, this is a solid app with great information that would be ideal for classroom use in particular. Any teacher of philosophy at the elementary level would Read more …

A Heart Pumping Adventure HD by Take 2 Ventures LLC

"A Heart Pumping Adventure" is from the Human Body Detectives (HBD) series, created by Heather Manley, a Naturopath and mom. She designed this series to educate kids in a fun way about their bodies. In the first story, "The Lucky Escape", two sisters end up taking a detailed trip into the digestive system to find out what's wrong with their baby brother. In the 2nd title, "Battle With the Bugs", the girls do their detective work inside the body of their little cousin, whose immune system is working hard to battle a virus. In this final chapter of the 3-book set, the girls adventure takes them inside their father's bloodstream to learn about heart-healthy fats.

"The Lucky Escape" is the story of two girls that end up shrinking down and traveling through their brother's digestive system, all the while learning about this important body system.  The print version was released with a CD that narrates the story, read by the author's children.

This is an excellent educational title designed by a Naturopath and mom to educate kids in a fun way about their bodies.  Human Body Detectives (HBD) is a series she created, with "The Lucky Escape" detailing a trip down the digestive system.  It is detailed and medically accurate, with illustrations that are both richly colored and authentic looking depictions of the inside of the body.

Auracle - Hurray for Pre-K! by Auryn, Inc

Hurray for Pre-K! is not a traditional storybook, but instead a delightful mix of photographs and text. Based on the print book published in 2000, by Ellen B. Senisi, this is a popular title for preparing youngsters for preschool. A diverse classroom of children (from New York State) is pictured, showing all the rituals that are reinforced for young students during their first school experience. The book is repetitive and a bit dry, but perfect for the age group it is designed to reach.

Getting ready for school is an important activity for young children and this book could provide them with a unique way to prepare in advance. The book can even be personalized significantly. Not only Read more …

Smarty Britches: Nouns by Cyndie Sebourn

A young boy with a pair of colorful pants he calls his 'smarty britches', takes readers on a tour of his hometown in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. This colorful learning adventure is a series of scenes from a young boy's rural life in the southern United States. He names each of the things he loves in his environment, teaching young learners about nouns along the way. Discover the People, Animals, Things, Places & Ideas that make up a child's world in this story app.

Night With Echo HD by Take 2 Ventures LLC

Published in print in over the last decade, Eric and the Enchanted Leaf is a series of books by Deborah K. Frontiera. The stories are about a little boy who discovers a magic leaf that can transport (and transform) him to learn more about nature's misunderstood creatures. In the first book he learns about spiders, in the 2nd title he appreciates the wolf and in this slightly spooky volume, Eric joins a bat named Echo.

With all three now available in digital or print, this award-winning series can charm children and their parents for decades to come. Each title is also available (sold separately) in Spanish. This book, 3rd in the series, features a different illustrator than the first Read more …

Weird But True by National Geographic Society

Featuring a name you can trust, National Geographics' Weird But True app is full of fascinating facts about science and nature. Bright, crisp and colorful graphics on simple pages that feel more like a slide-show than a book are entertaining, but have little enhancement. There are brief sound effects, but no narration. The app also contains ads for Goldfish, the sponsor of this app. Although free, it is actually really more of a teaser or 'lite' app, containing only 24 of the over 600 possible fact cards, which can be purchased in-app for another $5 total (at time of this review). Educational, solidly built but sparse in features while heavy on advertising links.

Collins Big Cat: My Bike Ride Story Creator by Harper Collins Publishers Limited

I really wanted to like this title, even love it, given that it is currently free and from Haper Collins, one of the world's largest publishing companies. It is part of the "Big Cat" series of apps, all of which include a specialized 'story creation' tool. There are several other apps in the series, including others I enjoyed, although none of them properly work in story creation mode.

But this title also gets very confusing with its basic interactive elements, taking a lovely (although quite simple) title from a print publication in 2006 and reissuing it in digital in a way that makes it nearly un-usable. It is currently free, along with a number of other titles in this series, so worth a Read more …
