Sir Charlie Stinky Socks and the Really BIG Adventure by Egmont UK

Sir Charlie Stinky Socks and the Really BIG Adventure is an amazing digital offering, adapted from a 2009 award winning print title for readers age 4-8. It features small animated touches and fun interactivity. The real treat, though, can be found in Stephenson's gorgeous illustrations and story, narrated engagingly by Michael Maloney. In print, this book was shortlisted for the Red House Children’s Book award and a winner of the Practical Pre-School Bronze medal.

The 5-star reviews at Amazon.com from readers just reinforce the book's literary reception. Charlie is a little boy with a wild imagination. He ventures into a scary castle to find a little princess having a Read more …

Fierce Grey Mouse HD by Tizio BV

Prepare yourself for one very cute mouse story. This book opens with a little grey mouse removing the word 'little' to put the word 'fierce' in its place for the title page. The letters are like cut-outs from magazine copy, giving the book a whimsical quality. The illustrations are hand-drawn and color-drenched, creating the perfect backdrop to the story. Every page is also filled with small but delightful animated elements triggered by tapping on the characters.

Little grey mouse wants to be fierce. So he lifts weights, practices pouncing and perfects his roar. Then he hides in a tree to wait for someone to scare. His good friends come by first, calling for their little mouse friend to Read more …

Leonard by Ink Robin, Inc

From the developers behind the 5-Star book app, Will & Kate: A Love Story, comes another hit. Attention to detail, polished enhancements, and top notch pacing make anything by Ink Robin a must-download app. This title treats readers to a story about a little boy with a BIG imagination. Leonard wants to make friends, but after moving to the country he discovers that it is harder than ever to find anyone to play with. He (and his blue cat) have many whimsical adventures before Leonard decides to build a friend instead (robot lovers will enjoy this plot twist).

Magnus the Magnetic Dog by Julian Damy

Magnus the Magnetic Dog is a beautifully illustrated and charming story from Julian Damy, created with Demibooks Composer. This app is billed as the first title in a series and called, "A New Friend". In this touching story, we meet Magnus the dog and learn about his fear of storms. His bravery inexplicably sets in motion a series of events that lead him to be struck by lightning. This lovable terrier isn't hurt, however, but his life is definitely about to change in a big way! Not only does he become 'magnetic' and attract unwanted metal objects of every kind, but he also manages to attract something more rare - a true friend.

With very light but polished animation and story-enhancing Read more …

A Present for Milo: A Touch-and-Surprise Storybook by Ruckus Media Group

A Present for Milo is one of the best books I've come across for children under age 6. The words in the book are very simple and the illustrations tell the story as much as the text. Milo is a cat, chasing a mouse in the book, but it never feels like a dangerous chase. In fact, they seem to be having the time of their lives! The reader gets to be part of this adventure, triggering whimsical 'reactions' from the two charming characters, as well as bringing other items in the pictures to life with seemingly endless possibilities.

This delightful interactivity is enhanced by animation that doesn't steal the show. This is particularly nice in a title for the very young and makes this book an Read more …

Middle School Confidential 2: Real Friends vs. the Other Kind by Electric Eggplant

The next title in the Middle School Confidential series is finally available for the iPad. This remarkable series is a must read for tweens & teens and a 'must download' for parents, educators and other concerned adults who want the young people in their lives to manage the typical struggles of adolescence just a little bit better. This series is really unique, offering something rare in the App Store; it's polished and well-crafted to the adult eye, but more importantly, teens will relate and enjoy the graphic novel format.

Many of my fans may not realize I am new to the world of children's literature, but if I am an expert in anything, it is actually teens. I spent the past two Read more …

Middle School Confidential 1: Be Confident in Who You Are by Electric Eggplant

I don't review a lot of books for older readers, but this graphic novel release of the 1st book in the Middle School Confidential series is really a stunning offering in the App Store. It isn't narrated, but even younger kids will enjoy having the stories read to them. I think many elementary age children will relate to the topics, like self-consciousness, bullying, stress, fitting in, sticky issues in friendships and learning to like yourself.

The book is developmentally perfect for tweens & teens, but the content was even appropriate for my preschooler (although some of the concepts were over his head). It is even an entertaining read & nice refresher for adults, since these Read more …

Auryn – Van Gogh and the Sunflowers by Auryn, Inc

Van Gogh and the Sunflowers is an extraordinary app with unique interactivity. The characters in this book, based on a gorgeous print title published in 2007, are all in motion. Characters in the story run, work and paint in scenes that can also be viewed (just tap the settings button) with their inner-workings exposed. You can see the mechanism behind the motion in a way that is very similar to Three Little Pigs and the Secrets of a Popup Book - a very cool effect.

The book is about a boy named Camille who lives in a village where sunflowers grow wild. One day a strange man arrives in town and begins to paint. Camille's family befriends the poor traveler, Vincent van Read more …

Slice of Bread goes to the Beach by Grant Adam

This is another phenomenal book app from Jelly Biscuits, makers of Food Fight!. Like their previous book app by Glenn Melenhorst, this title is fun but also cognizant of the adult reading alongside the child. With subtle humor, a tale unfolds about an anthropomorphized slice of bread who drives a toaster-mobile and likes to hunt for treasure by digging in the sand at the beach. He's hoping to find the match to his latest find - a single red sandal, the right one.

The story has great attention to detail, so when Slice of Bread is digging, he pulls up all sorts of things most of us would be excited to find ... like jewels, bags of cash, trophies and even a treasure chest full of gold (I guess Read more …

Violet and the Mystery Next Door - Interactive ... by Black Dog Books, LLC

Violet and the Mystery Next Door is the most recent book in the "Violet" series of ebooks. These books are a unique series with interactivity that is integrated nicely into the storyline. The series stars a little girl who wants to be a detective, searching for clues and solving mysteries. In this winter-themed book she meets a partner in crime-solving, a neighbor boy named Maxwell who goes by "Maxman".

This series of titles is well made, engaging the reader in the story's plot. The interactive clues are set up in a very thoughtful way that draws the child into the story itself. In this book the reader even gets to make decisions at several points along the way, giving the book a Read more …

The adventure of the 7Wonderlicious girls by 7wonderlicious Pty. Ltd.

This wonderful little book of stories is a great way to start up conversations with your child about all kinds of interesting topics.  Each of the 28 'short stories' is complemented by a fun illustration of girls doing their best, helping others, being brave, learning and feeling good about themselves.  It's an inspirational little booklet, really, with enough material to engage a child (or even better yet, a group of children) in many conversations about what they are capable of and how to feel confident.

The book has delightful narration and beautiful hand-drawn illustrations to go along with each little story (6-8 sentences long).  I especially liked the one where the two Read more …

Twinkle Twinkle by Super Simple Learning, Inc.

Twinkle Twinkle is an adorable book app with music video of the classic song included. The computer animation in this title is superb, accompanied by a simple but sweet story about an owl making friends with a star in the night sky. The title is also interactive, letting the reader trigger most of the animated scenes.

Extras include a page with 20 stars to tap and hear the count aloud (although no numbers appear, the stars do animate and 'spin' as they are tapped). There is also a 2+ minute animated music video of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star that is very relaxing with delightful piano music. The book itself is presented with short animated clips that play briefly before each page's text Read more …

Finding Nemo Storybook Deluxe by Disney Publishing Worldwide Applications

Disney brings their film adaptation of Finding Nemo to life in this digital book, pairing animated clips from the feature film alongside a nicely abridged version of the movie's plot. This app is a real treat that includes much more than a book, providing lots of entertainment for young readers in the form of games, puzzles and coloring pages based on the hit movie.

My child, like most, loves Disney films, so he was delighted to hear the original voices from the movie interspersed throughout the book, along with lots of animation. This is one of the ways this storybook stands out from many of the other movie-themed book apps available. This title also has a nice choice of Read more …

The Tree I See - Interactive Storybook by Aridan Books, Inc.

"Do you see the tree I see? It's short and small, just like me," begins this sweet rhyming tale by Aridan Books. It is told in the first person by a little boy who befriends a tree and learns a heart-warming lesson in the process. Somewhat reminiscent of The Giving Tree, this short picture book shows a tree that provides shelter and sustenance to many creatures. It has an expressive face and 'arms like you and me' (roots), all personified beautifully with animation.

At first it's just the boy who rests on its trunk, but soon many animal friends join the tree, who was once sad and lonely. A squirrel seeks nuts, several birds a nesting place, and more in this title that is as Read more …

The Hippo, the Rhino, the Elephant and Me by Ink Robin, Inc

Ink Robin is one of my favorite eBook publishers around!  Their stories are so rich with great characters, wonderful illustrations and quite funny.  They have recently launchedThe Hippo, the Rhino, the Elephant and Me which is an interactive story set in rhyme about a little girl.  She has three rather large friends (a hippo, a rhino and an elephant) and the story takes us along for a journey in the day in the life of these four friends over the course of a week. It’s illustrated by a British artist (Lisa Hunt) and narrated by Julie Hill who also narrated their first app, Will & Kate.

Penelope HD by Take 2 Ventures LLC

Penelope the Purple Pirate is a wonderful story for kids about a little girl who doesn't want to take a nap, so while stuck in her room, she dresses up and then imagines she is a pirate out at sea. She wears a purple sash and has friends among the sea animals. She rides on the back of the turtle to find an island and search for treasure. When she 'returns' from her adventure she is ready for her nap (tired from all her travels, perhaps?).

This book features simple narration with a tiny bit of animation, like sparkles around the treasure. The sound effects that were added in the update are really nicely spread out, with something 'hidden' on nearly every page. They are things like splashing Read more …

Ellison The Elephant by Oceanhouse Media, Inc.

"He was a young and little elephant, but not a baby elephant," begins this inspirational picture book, now available in digital from Oceanhouse Media. Based on the popular 2005 print title by Eric Drachman, Ellison the Elephant is the kind of storybook that has all the trappings of an instant classic. It's about an elephant named Ellison, who is having trouble finding his trumpet song. All he can manage is a little 'toot'.

Of course, not only does little Ellison find his voice, but he also discovers that he is actually special, not 'less than' the other elephants. This is the real genius of Drachman stories, like Leo the Lightning Bug & A Frog Thing; they emphasize the ways in Read more …

Mabel's New Home by Two Big Dads

This book is the first in a series called Mabel's Fables. It is about a little chicken named Mabel who is on her way to a new farm to live. This farm already has an established henhouse with it's own 'pecking order'. When Mabel arrives, all the other chickens take notice.

This is an anxious experience for Mabel, until she is befriended by another chicken, named Frekle. By the end of the story, Mabel has settled into her new home with Frekle's help. My son really enjoyed this sweet tale about adjusting to a new environment, dealing with bullies and making friends. The illustrations appear to be sketched by hand with colored pencils and fit the story nicely. The text feels a little large Read more …

A New Pet by Psichogios Publications

A New Pet is about a dog named Spike.  His owners suddenly come home with a new 'pet' one day. He notices the changes in his owners, like how they only pay attention to the new pet, even though all it does is cry. This new pet is a baby, of course.  And as the story progresses, we see Spike realize he could never hurt the new pet and then discover that he actually likes her. As the baby grows into a little girl, Spike comes to love her and even shares his secret hiding places in the rose bed for burying bones.

The illustrations are hand drawn and the way Spike is depicted is really expressive, almost as if you can see his shock at this new pet who is clearly less fun than he is, Read more …

Pete & Pillar HD by Take 2 Ventures LLC

This delightful storybook app is based on the print edition published in 2007. Pete and Pillar, two trucks, are best friends despite coming from different worlds. You see, one truck is a 'hauler', while the other a 'digger' and these two types of vehicles just don't like each other very much. But in the end the friendship between these two helps save the town from a flood and teaches everyone, including the reader, a great lesson about friendship.

Rowdy Raccoon and the Turtle Who Wanted to Fly is an interactive story book for kids that brings to by Auryn, Inc

Rowdy Raccoon and the Turtle Who Wanted to Fly is based on the book of the same name by Donna C. Braymer and illustrated By Shachi Kale. It was published in print in 2009. It is beautifully illustrated and the interactive features are incredible.

The narration options in this app are excellent. The ability to write your own text for the story particularly appealed to me. It is not one I have personally used before. The voice over capabilities we see from time to time, but the added feature of changing the text on each individual page as well is a huge bonus. It allows the parent or caregiver to adapt the storyline to suit the language capabilities of each user. However if you Read more …

Children's Book - Monkey & Croc by Jujubee Books

A cute monkey and a less-than-menacing looking crocodile star in this little digital book app for kids age 2-6. It is filled with gorgeous illustrations that tell the story as much as the words. The text of the story is comprised of very simple sentences, making this an ideal book for young children learning to read.

The story is also very cute. Monkey and croc appear to have a lot in common - they both live in the jungle, like to hide and ... they are both hungry. As the monkey heads for some bananas, the reader sees 'Croc' with his eye on the monkey (possibly to eat him for a snack). But after several pages of following the monkey with a hungry look, we find out Croc is also Read more …

Elly Book 1 by Dipali Vaidya

The Elly books, by Jon Higham, are getting a makeover, starting with book one! Each title will now have the lovely narration of Rose Higham, "a drama student and the author’s niece." The text doesn't highlight as read, but it is otherwise perfect now for pre-readers.

Elly the Reindeer is a cute cartoon-style reindeer. She has adventures with her animal friends in a sweet rural setting where all the child-like characters live in their own homes (by themselves) and look to each other for help, fun and solving the occasional dilemma. In this story there is a mysterious letter in Elly's mailbox. It says "You are invited to a birthday party tomorrow at 11:00am." Unfortunately there is no Read more …

Cowboys and Aliens: The Kids by ISBX

This title is based on the 2006 graphic novel about a group of cowboys trying to save townspeople abducted by aliens. Timed to release as "Cowboys & Aliens" hit theaters this summer, this title is only vaguely related to the movie's more mature plot. In this book, fictional kids are introduced representing sterotypical 'cowboys', 'indians' and 'aliens'. The storyline has the kids refusing to share their toys but soon they decide it would be more fun if they can all play together. Told in rhyme, the story ends with new friendships made (and possibly peace in the universe).

The app is solidly made with a lot of nice settings & extras, including painting pages based on all 23 pages of Read more …

Over the course of a dozen pages, however, Dasha proves herself to be both brave and smart. Her extraordinary adventures introduce her (and young readers) to wolves, witches, giants and more.
