Jackie Junko by Springy Thingy

Jackie Junko and the Old Ship Yard is an app storybook about a mischievous young boat who wants to go on a dangerous mission across the water, like his father, but runs into more trouble than he bargained for. The world they inhabit reminds me of Pixar's Cars, except everything is a boat instead of a car. It is the first in a planned series of Jackie Junkie app-stories and it is iPad only.

What I like:

* The graphics are very, very good and unique. They are bright and colorful and give the feeling of interacting with a cartoon. Each page has water at the bottom so the reader can see what is happening under the boats. There are different fish and sea creatures, including my personal Read more …

My Dad Drives a Roller Coaster Car by Crab Hill Press LLC

From Crab Hill Press, this delightful storybook app has everything a great picture book needs. Whether in digital or print, every children's title really is defined by the story & illustrations; on those merits, this title simply sings. A fun tale is presented, made just for the tablet, but it stakes its claim on success with the oldest trick in the book ... an engaging narrative.

A little boy tells the story in the first person, explaining that his dad drives a 'roller coaster car' and he wants to drive one too. His mom rides a carousel horse, his uncle rides a rocket, his aunt rides a spinning 'teacup' and even grandpa has fun, riding a log from the amusement park to get Read more …

Scott's Submarine by Charly Playe

Scott's Submarine is a cute digital book about an underwater adventure. The book has a unique graphic style and storyline that can be read at two age levels (2-3 & 4+) which could also translate nicely to reading levels for early readers and those who are more advanced. The book also has settings for multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French & Japanese. This makes it a terrific choice for foreign language learning & practice.

As a digital book, this title really stands out most for its stunning computer graphics. There is a lot to see and to do in this book, too, and while it is not really animated, there are several fun scenes that 'vibrate' to give the Read more …

Five Little Monkeys Wash the Car by Oceanhouse Media

This is another 'Five Monkeys' book from the beloved book series by Eileen Christelow. Like Five Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, this is an adorably illustrated ebook based on a print title published in 2000. When I checked the Amazon.com reviews for the print version I discovered that even the lowest rated reviews 'highly recommend' this title - the series is just that good. In digital form, these books are transformed with sound, interactivity and text that highlights as it is read.

In this story, the monkeys try to help mama sell their old beat-up car by washing, painting & perfuming the vehicle (it still doesn't run). Then they push it down the hill in an effort to get more Read more …

Mum's Cronky Car by Digital Leaf Ltd.

Mum's Cronky Car from UK developer Digital Leaf is a humorous digital book for ages 4+ which features the lamenting of a young girl who is embarrassed to have to go everywhere in the family's old broken-down car. The book is yet another title from Anita Pouroulus and it's illustrated by Jon Lycett-Smith. It's similar in style to her other works, Pancake Pandemonium and Oh, What a Tangle but lacks some of the whimsy of those efforts.

With its bumper bar held on with a bit of rope, a bent antennae and mismatching colours, the Cronky car is visually not up to scratch. It also refuses to start without a mighty push and tends to leave bits behind it as it Read more …

Cars 2 World Grand Prix Read and Race by Disney Publishing Worldwide Applications

Many parents remember last summer as one that belonged to Toy Story 3. Well, this summer is definitely in the grips of Cars 2 at our house, so this app was an instant hit with my little boy. Told with narration that mimics an announcer at the racetrack, Cars 2 World Grand Prix Read and Race is a storybook with an extra children won't soon forget - a racing game bundled into the app.

The storybook covers the plot twists involving the races in Tokyo, Italy and England (plus the trip back to Radiator Springs) and less about the spy mystery (which is the emphasis of the other Cars 2 book app, reviewed earlier this summer). After this trip through the movie's major plot points, Read more …

I Am An Astronaut by Tizio BV

From Tizio Publishing, this personalizable title allows you to take a picture of your child (or use a photo) to show them as an astronaut inside the book's pages. It is short but sweet, featuring light interactivity and animation. Among the fun things to tap on this title's eleven pages is a cool 'control panel' for a rocket ship. It could even be the digital replacement for that old-school toy, the toddler 'busy box' (a toy with lots of buttons & levers).

Seeing your child's picture in several scenes (or their name, which appears on a flag), is really fun; kids reading or listening will be especially engaged as they anticipate seeing themselves in each scene. You can enter a child's Read more …

Skid & the Too Tiny Tunnel HD by Take 2 Ventures LLC

This is an inspirational tale from the author of Pete & Pillar, The Big Rain, featuring a little tractor named Skid. From author, Jeffry Stoddard, this is another book that is exceptionally well-crafted and based on a print title, published in 2009. In this story we meet Skid, a tractor with an inferiority complex. Skid triumphs in the end because he is the only tractor small enough to bravely go in after Pillar when she is buried in a very small tunnel.

The Lettermen go in a plane by Stefan Nowak

This fun digital storybook under the category "Education" is interactive in a way that not only makes reading fun, but reinforces spelling, reading and sight words. The 'lettermen' themselves are simple but engaging cartoon letters with hands and feet. They are very appealing to kids and have great expressions that match the words they are forming on each page.

This tale has the 'lettermen' going in a plane. The narration, a British English speaker, is crisp and clear. The Lettermen was a series of books created in the late 1980's by Roger Knights. This book was published in print in 1993. According to the information page in the book, "It was never intended to be an educational system or Read more …

Tractor Mac, You're A Winner HD by PicPocket Books

Tractor Mac is a charismatic red tractor with headlight eyes.  In "You're a Winner", based on the print book published by Billy Steers in 2007, Tractor Mac and Farmer Bill are getting ready for the county fair and a big tractor pull.  The illustrations and artwork are a perfect fit for this story about being a good sport when you don't win and instead 'winning' by being helpful.  In this story, the carousel breaks down, so even though Mac is disappointed when he loses the tractor pull, he gets to feel useful by using his motor to get the carousel turning again.  All the children are very happy and Mac realizes there are more ways to be a winner than just winning a Read more …

Tractor Mac Builds HD by PicPocket Books

Tractor Mac is a charismatic red tractor with headlight eyes.  He and his friend Lucy (a cute green tractor who's gender is distinguished from Mac only by her adorable little eyelashes), help with an old fashioned barn-raising in this charming book.  The illustrations and artwork are a perfect fit for this story about working together and sticking to the job, even when you don't want to.  He converses with the farm animals around him as he works hard milling wood.  They tease him for being stuck, but he sticks with it and then finds out he's been making planks for a new barn.  All the neighboring townsfolk come to help with the building and Tractor Mac realizes he's Read more …

I Wonder - Kids' Book by Ware's me srl

Readers are in for a treat with this lyrical tale about a little boy named Marco, traveling by train for the first time. As he passes each scene, he wonders to himself about the things he sees ... are there dads working in the high-rise buildings, do the birds talk to each other, and is the scarecrow ever scared himself? At the end, the train pulls into the station as another one is pulling out. Marco sees a little girl in the window of the passing passenger car and wonders, does "her heart beat as fast as mine ..."

Gorgeous illustrations are one of the highlights of this book app, along with lightly animated, interactive elements. These are fun, although not really tailored to the story's Read more …

Cars 2 Storybook Deluxe by Disney Publishing Worldwide Applications

Have you caught the Cars 2 movie yet? Well, my little boy was delighted to help me review the new digital book app by the same title, especially after seeing the movie. The app is a packed offering that includes a storybook, puzzles, painting pages and two small mini games. If you liked Cars 2 or plan to see it soon, this is sure to be a hit with your little Disney fan, too.

The movie plot points are highlighted throughout the book, but it could be difficult to follow if you aren't familiar with the film. For my little boy, I think seeing the book before the movie gave him a lot of fun anticipation, but he didn't fully understand the way the plot was connected until after we saw Cars 2 in Read more …

Rocket Book by Oleg Shadrin

This week, I used this app in a blog post about the difference (or lack thereof) between iBooks (or eBooks) and the new digital category of "book apps". The Rocket app is a quirky and high-quality public domain storytelling experience that began in print in 1912, by Peter Newell. It is useful to demonstrate how different an app and eBook presentation can be on the touch tablet, particularly as an illustration of the point that an app can even be less interactive, although more flexilble in design.

As an app, this title is not only free, but also delightfully presented. It takes an original story from the turn of the last century and makes it accessible to new audiences in the 21st century, Read more …

Richard Scarry's Busytown HD by Night & Day Studios, Inc.

I really wanted to love this app ... I loved the Richard Scarry books as a child, particularly pouring over their detailed illustrations to see every little funny and creative detail. This app, however, is a much less free form experience, with a game that has the reader look for a specific item in each room's scene. While it is fun and very engaging for children, as an adult who enjoyed the print books, I found the app somewhat underwhelming overall.

The app is solidly made with simple arrow page turns between game activities. The game is also nicely narrated and very intuitively designed. I suspect if I'd had no previous experience with the print books I might be less disappointed. My Read more …

I learn with transportation: Sounds, words, colors, shapes, numbers, languages, and more ... by DADA Company Edutainment S.L.

Like a bright, colorful board book, this app gives toddlers and preschoolers the chance to match early learning concepts to images of fun vehicles. In animated scenes, young learners see and hear images for concepts that include sounds, words, colors, shapes and numbers. Solidly made with ample setting for navigation and controlling sound, this app is easy enough for the youngest child to navigate.

The app is lightly animated and interactive, too. Tapping on most of the vehicles brings a quick reward of sound effects, a change in the animation and verbal reinforcements. I found the narration a bit too "bright and shiny" sounding for my tastes, but I think it hits just the right note for the Read more …

The Christmas Train - I Think I Can by Tricia Valeski

This is a cute story about a little train engine that helps a large train get back on track to deliver holiday gifts to children on the other side of a mountain. Perseverance pays off in this sweet Christmas tale. The app itself is solidly made & features a unique kind of interactivity based on the print 'magic ink' books. In digital form, these titles are a lot of fun, with each page containing two images and text - simply swipe your finger over the grey-scale page to reveal a second colorful page that triggers additional text. Otherwise the app is not especially enhanced, but has a great story, nice illustrations and quality narration to go along with the 'magic'.

This title is one of Read more …

Collins Big Cat: My Bike Ride Story Creator by Harper Collins Publishers Limited

I really wanted to like this title, even love it, given that it is currently free and from Haper Collins, one of the world's largest publishing companies. It is part of the "Big Cat" series of apps, all of which include a specialized 'story creation' tool. There are several other apps in the series, including others I enjoyed, although none of them properly work in story creation mode.

But this title also gets very confusing with its basic interactive elements, taking a lovely (although quite simple) title from a print publication in 2006 and reissuing it in digital in a way that makes it nearly un-usable. It is currently free, along with a number of other titles in this series, so worth a Read more …

The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Car Trip by Oceanhouse Media, Inc.

There have been hundreds of Berenstain Bears stories published since the first one debuted 1962. Too Much Car Trip is one of HarperCollins square paperback series, published in 2009. According to Wikipedia:

The story begins with your tot choosing their own main character, Lewis or Maddi, depending on your kiddo's preference.  The story can either be narrated or read aloud. In the narration setting, each word is highlighted as it as read. This a non-negotiable for me when it comes to book Read more …

Launched in 2009, this developer has produced hundreds of high-quality apps for young readers, including all of the titles from Dr. Seuss.

This new version of Green Eggs and Ham will not disappoint, but what is different in this title? How has "Read & Learn" improved or changed the digital reading experience?
