Astrid & Siri by Arctic Star LLC

This is an adorable book app starring a girl named Astrid and her little friend Siri, an Artic fox. Astrid has a strand of magical purple thread and a talent for making clothing for the animals of the forest. Her designs are imaginative and include a series of outfits for the sheep, made from their own wool. She calls her designs the "Arctic Fairytale" collection, made for her Midsummer's Eve soiree.

This is one of those very interactive books that is a lot of fun for kids but may not necessarily enhance story comprehension. There are lots of cool 'magical' effects, like dragging a little needle & thread over many of the images, revealing the handmade costumes. The animals are also Read more …

Princess Dress-Up: My Sticker Book by Disney Publishing Worldwide Applications

This Disney Princesses sticker book has been a chart topper, and now it actually deserves a download. Very nice update! It's still not a traditional storybook, but it now has at least a short story for each princess and you can dress her up from head to toe (they added shoes!). Now your child can also see the princess in all her accessories and take her picture fully dressed. They even added another princess, Tiana. These changes should make a lot of little princesses (and their parents) very happy!

This little app in the 'books' category is really more of an 'entertainment' title - like digital paper dolls in sticker-book form. It features the very popular Disney Princesses, six in all Read more …

Just Shopping with Mom - Little Critter by Oceanhouse Media, Inc.

Just Shopping with Mom by Mercer Mayer was published in print in 1989. It tells the story of Little Critter and his two siblings on a trip to the grocery story with their mom. The little sister in particular is giving her mom trouble, asking for things and disappearing down the aisles. For once, Little Critter is the voice of reason, trying to drag his sister back and get her to put stuff back. The digital version of this story also adds a new twist, keeping track as the reader tries to find all the little mice (19 total) hidden on almost every page.

Many readers have asked, "What kind of animal is Little Critter?" According to Wikipedia, Mercer Mayer did not specify which type of Read more …

Do you know a little girl who would like to play dress up with Fancy Nancy? Based on the 2005 Jane O'Connor title that held the top spot on the New York Times Bestseller list for almost 100 weeks, this app is an exceptional offering for creative play. A very short story about a party little Nancy is attending is included, but the real highlight is the free-form dress-up playtime this app provides.

The app has a very nice set of directions under "How to Play". The Cloud Factory by Dalmatian Studios, INC

The Cloud Factory, from Dalmatian Studios, is an exceptional fine-art book app for children (and adults) with a whimsical storyline about a grandfather and his granddaughter. A smokestack pumps out black and white line-drawn clouds with delicate classical music in the background as the app is opened. Text can be hidden or shown (no highlighting) and readers are intricately involved in this interactive storyapp from the first page. Young readers will get to tilt the iPad to pour in milk, rip open a flour sack and dump cotton into a mixture that is designed to make "clouds".

The sketches appear, colorless but full of feeling, as a little girl, Luna, rides with her own small suitcase in hand. Read more …

Hannah by Bronwyn Callander

Hannah Habeebee McHats is 'crazy about hats!' ... and not just your typical hats. She loves both large and small, but also more exotic hats, like those that glow, make noise, and even taste "oh, so sweet" (think cupcake)! Filled with lightly animated elements that are triggered with a simple tap, this book app is sure to please young children and their parents. It isn't the most highly produced app, nor one with a ton of extras to keep a child busy for hours, but for the sheer enjoyment of a good book, this is one of my top recommendations.

As a digital book, this title is solidly made with simple settings to read with or without narration. Simply tap the words on each page to trigger the Read more …
