Curious Media has created an inspired little app in Jubitron, featuring fun interactive elements and story enhancements that take the picture book to a place 'out of this world'. On every one of this book's nearly 20 pages, there is an unique way to engage the reader with the story. From twirling the world beneath the feet of Jubitron to flinging her spaceship through the clouds, this is definitely a title that will capture the interest of young explorers, especially girls.
The story has well integrated and polished enhancements, however it is a bit light on plot. The characters embark on an adventure, but it doesn't get more complex than a picnic interrupted by rain. I must admit, though, that Mr. Sunshine and the idea that he was merely 'washing up for dinner' when he caused the brief (and disruptive) rainstorm, was deeply amusing. The elements are also thoughtful and rarely distract from the storyline. Even with a bit of light interactive play, this makes for a great length for bedtime reading.
This title is lovely in so many ways, including a hip theme song by "Mr. Daddy" and great illustrations that capture the futuristic yet retro robot art reminiscent of the 20th century. Unfortunately, it does not have adequate features to navigate the app, meaning you can page back or forward but there is no home button or page guide. The app does include beautiful narration that highlights perfectly word-for-word. There is also a unique set of hints on the bottom of each page that encourage the user to explore the page more thoroughly. This doesn't entirely make up for not being able to navigate, but makes for a rather solid & polished reading experience for users of all ages.
Overall, this is a unique & enjoyable picture book app for children & adults to share. It marries the digital arts to a more retro theme and look for storytelling ... all done in a way that is deeply satisfying. Recommended.

A girl robot named Jubitron and her animal friends decide to go on a picnic. They bring olives, cake & cheese. The friends bring music and dance along. Things are swell until it starts to rain, which dampens the mood of everyone.
But then, Jubitron has a 'bright idea' ... deciding to see where all the rain is coming from, blasting in her rocket up to the clouds. They let the sun (who was just 'washing up for dinner' which caused the brief raining commotion below) know that the rain was ruining their picnic. He stops the rain for them and then is invited to shine down on the picnic to join them.
