Barnyard Dance - Boynton

September 3, 2012

By: Mary Mahon

Stomp, Clap & Tap in this Musical App!

Barnyard Dance is the latest Sandra Boynton board book brought to life by app developer Loud Crow Interactive of Vancouver, Canada. The book was originally written 20 years ago, and is the fourth Sandra Boynton Board Book produced by Loud Crow.  When you open the book it is just like you are flipping the pages of a board book, but with some surprises thrown in.

Before you even open the book you see it sitting on a table and you can play the instruments sitting beside it. You can opt to read it yourself or have it read by Bluegrass musician John Stey of Stookil Express.  Traditional hoedown music plays in the background and John calls out the moves as if you were at a Square Dance. All of the animals in the book can be made to do their dance steps, and by tapping, spinning or swiping you can have animals dancing all over the place. Pressing the animals will get them mooing, baaing, chirping or squeaking.

There are little hidden surprises too – one of my favorites is you can actually move the bow on the cows fiddle and play it. The cheeping, scrambling chicks, including one that hatches from an egg, were also a big hit with my kids, as were the whole herd of squeaking mice that come to stand with the donkey. The music adds a lively feel to it, and although there are a few places where the narration feels a little choppy due to an overlong pause between lines, overall the idea of calling it like you are actually at a barnyard dance works well. The text is highlighted as its read, which is useful for children learning to read, and you can also tap on a word to hear it spoken.

It is a fun app – best suited to toddlers and preschoolers, but with enough fun interactions that younger elementary school students can enjoy it too.

Story Synopsis - Barnyard Dance - Boynton

From iTunes:

Stomp your feet! Clap your hands! Everybody ready for a BARNYARD DANCE! Loud Crow Interactive and Boynton Moo Media proudly present a terrifically interactive musical version of Sandra Boynton’s much-adored board book. Cows and ducks and little kids rejoice!

In Barnyard Dance! irrepressible farm animals join in a rollicking square dance. With this wonderful app, little listeners can move the violin bow to play the cow’s fiddle. Now—with a touch or a tap or a pull—you can help the farm animals bounce, twirl, strut, spin, hop, leap, turn and, of course, promenade.

Beloved bluegrass musician John Stey narrates in the traditional cadence of a square dance caller, backed by a lively country band playing Michael Ford’s “Barnyard Square Dance.” This digital book is a catchy and fun romp for little ones and their parents, written with irresistible rhyme and rhythm, and illustrated—and now animated—by the author with those quirky and exuberant Boynton characters.
