The Amazing Adventures of Eco Boy, Vol 2

April 11, 2011

The Digital Media Diet

This is a short and informative ebook app about recycling plastic. It is part of the series of Eco Boy books, and features a new character, Bio Girl. The story begins with children littering the beach with their empty plastic bottles. This 'rubbish' gives rise to a plastic-based villain named Bottlexo who terrorizes kids by throwing plastic bottles at them. In response, a little girl is inspired by Eco Boy's example to become "Bio Girl". The two kids combine their superpowers to clean up the plastic bottles and put them into recycling bins.

This book, like the first volume in the series, is told in rhyming verse; "On a new mission, we shall be together. Looking after our planet to make it feel better." The storybook is illustrated with interesting line drawings that are mostly grayscale with just a touch of color on each page. It has a fun, cartoon style that clearly explains the concepts of plastic recycling to even the youngest of kids. The book is also nicely narrated by a British English speaker. The text is easy enough to read, although it may be difficult for the youngest readers because of its style - white text, outlined in a bubble-like font on an otherwise white background.

This story, while simple, is engaging and has an excellent educational message. All the digital books in this series are also solidly made with easy page turning and simple settings. This title doesn't have the additional educational page describing what recycling is, which would be nice, but it has great pictures depicting the process of plastic recycling, like sorting by code into bins, condensing into a block, going into the factory and coming back out as new products. The only thing I'd suggest adding would be discussion questions and ideas for further reading for kids about this topic.

Overall, this ebook (and the whole 'Adventures of Eco Boy' series) is fun for kids. It is a great book to introduce the basic concept of recycling plastics and can be a catalyst to start conversations about 'green' topics with youngsters. This one is a particular treat, as Eco Boy gets a partner in crime-fighting that girls can identify with, too.

Story Synopsis - The Amazing Adventures of Eco Boy, Vol 2

One day at the beach kids were playing and not thinking about the environment. After finishing their drinks, they dumped their empty plastic bottles everywhere until plastic rubbish covered the beach, the road and all over the nearby city. All this plastic trash gave a new super-villian the chance to form. Bottlexo, the plastic monster, begins to terrorize the children by throwing used plastic bottles at them. This inspires a little girl to become "Bio Girl". She joins "Eco Boy" to help the planet by gathering all the plastic into bins for recycling. Thus the planet is saved for another generation.
