Published in print in the late 1980's, the delightful simplicity of Byron Barton's illustrations have now arrived in digital. This first app covers all the important aspects of flying, from the types of planes to the steps it takes to take off, land and disembark a jet's passengers. Presented in bold colors with simple lines, these charming illustrations will win over any toddler, especially those fond of transportation books.
This title is lightly animated and interactive, allowing the curious child to drag items around the sky view, tap to hear words or tap to name objects in the scene. Settings include nice volume controls, a home button, pageguide and even recordable narration options. Like other titles from Oceanhouse Media, this one has a number of links that leave the app, although they are nicely tucked away in the settings, accessible behind a parental gate. An easy to read font highlights as narrated and page turn is simple arrows.
Overall, these digital books are solidly built and polished. Young children in particular will enjoy reading them over and over. The bright and engaging illustrations, along with simple, repetitive text that is perfect for pre-readers also make these great apps to share for preschool and toddler storytimes (in schools and libraries). Akin to the toddler 'board book' in print, the Byron Barton series is must for the nursery school set.
