Disney Pixar’s movie UP was one of my favorite movies the year it came out. I loved the whole story and Ellie reminded me a bit of my adventurous daughter – with the crazy red hair and all! And what isn’t to like about Dug, the silly dog who wants to help his master any way possible. Dug reminds me of our dog as he is a tad goofy like him!
So it was with some excitement to hear that Disney Pixar released a fun app called UP: My Name Is Dug. The story was written by Kiki Thorpe and illustrated by Ronnie del Carmen. I like that the illustrations are hand-drawn and you can see the similarity with the movie but it is done in such a way that you feel you are reading a real picture book that is not filled with too many distracting animations. We start off with Dug sitting down looking at you wagging his tail and sticking his tongue out in eager anticipation of what iss to come. And what is to come is an adventure looking for the ever-elusive bird. You have the option to have it read to you or you can read it yourself. Part of the appeal of Dug is his voice. It is the same voice as in the movie and on the first page Dug tell us that “I can smell you – you smell of peanut butter.” And he goes on to say that “even though he just met us he loves us and would like to have some of our peanut butter”. I hope you are laughing now because you will be throughout the whole story.
Dug introduces readers to his world in the wilds of the jungle with an endearing naïveté.The app features two reading modes for different skill levels and original music, creating an immersive and fun-filled reading experience for kids! There are simple animations throughout, lots of tail wagging and a panting tongue that will surely entertain. The ending is so funny but I won’t spoil it for you. Seriously though, for the ending alone I would get this app! It is hysterical!
