Angus the Irritable Bull

July 14, 2014

By: Cynthia Gregory

Bottom Line: Angus the Irritable Bull isn't trying to break over the fence with a new take on the book app medium, but it has certainly done a blue-ribbon job of presenting this cute story by Dean Proudfoot and Daron Parton to young readers.

We all know an Angus in real life — the grumpy person everyone is afraid to upset lest they have to deal with the bull. There is a possibility that I am married to an Angus (not really, my darling husband, go back to stomping daisies while I review). It's important to remember that irritable people, who are not like my husband at all, might not even know why they are grumpy and they just need a friend who will stick by them.

Angus is a grumpy bull. The cows, the dogs and even the farmer avoid him until one day, a little bird lands on his back. Angus tries to shoo the bird, but the bird takes up residence and without giving the ending away, makes Angus' life better.

The app opens to a home screen with title, author credits, page selection and settings. Page selection and settings are accessible on each page with options to turn off or on sounds, narration, music and text. Navigation through the app comes with a simple swipe left or right.Angus the Irritable Bull boasts over 80 hot spots and they are seamlessly added in a way that doesn't distract from the story. Tapping on the scared farmer makes him drive away on his tractor and touching the cows make them shiver in fright.

The narration and music are perfect compliments to this cute story and add a lighthearted feel. The illustrations are absolutely gorgous with lots of color and pattern detail, such as Angus' curly hair and the leaves and landscape surrounding Angus.

The best thing about this app is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. There is whimsy on every page, including the credits, where they promise no bulls were harmed in the making of the app, but there were smashed daisies and they apologized for that part. There are tons of puns that I love, such as "ador-a-bull", "lov-a-bull", and "udderly." I would love very much to see the individual words highlighted in future updates to help reinforce early literacy and a little something extra like questions at the end to really drive home some of the lessons learned with comprehension.

Overall, I fell udderly in love with Angus and wish him and his new best bird friend the best of luck.

Highly Recommended!
