Here at Digital-Storytime.com, we love book apps about "being different" and Lucy Ladybird is a title we have enjoyed for nearly a year. With light interactivity and animation, this gorgeously illustrated app tells the story of a bug who is rejected by her peers for lacking 'spots'. Feeling "sad and alone", little Lucy flies off to admire (and envy) other creatures who have 'spots'. She discovers the other animals are much more friendly and generous than her ladybird 'friends', for a surprise ending that will please readers and listeners of all ages.
This book is also available in print, from talented author and illustrator Sharon King-Chai. Created in the UK, the term "ladybird" is more common, however most N. American audiences will be familiar with "ladybugs" - the little orange-red insects that spread their wings (with or without spots). As a digital offering, this book includes nice navigation, lovely narration (with a crisp, articulate British accent from Voiceover artist Frances Lima) and helpful hints about what to explore on each of the more than 20 story pages.
There are also a few small extras. Children can color six nicely designed coloring-book pages featuring creatures from the story: Ladybug, Fish, Frog, Caterpillar, Butterfly and Bird. The catchy theme song from Lucy is also included in a 'sing-along' and 'karaoke' version, making a fun extention activity for youngsters. Overall, this is a delightful storybook app with beautiful illustrations that have been compared to Eric Carle. The storyline is also perfect for teaching little ones about acceptance, friendship and being unique.
